School nursery only takes children who are completely toilet trained?

Ds is 3 on Dec 21st and is due to start nursery on Jan 7th. He is resistant to toilet training at the mo, and I haven't felt the need to push him along at all. He will wear pull ups for the childminder, and has done a couple of wees on the potty for her, but refuses to entertain anything like this at home.
I had no idea that they had to be completely trained by the time they were three, and am now in a total panic. What if he isn't trained by January, will they tae his place away? It's all very stressful!

They can't not take him, it is discrimination.

I've written about this here Follow the link to the Sure Start document - nurseries should not be forcing toilet training.

Thanks for that, very interesting. Am now that ds is considered to be delayed in this aspect of development - I had 3 in my head as vaguely normal, ds will be just 3 and just getting his head round it, is that bad?
I am also reluctant to kick off with the school when he is just starting (although ultimately I want him to go to a different school that has no nursery). The letter offering him a place clearly states that all children must be toilet trained though. My childminder has said that she would be willing to go in and change him if he pooed, maybe I should see if we can crack it by then and if not have a word about the pull-ups/childminder solution?

Some say no to nappies, but will deal with accidents!

Wouldn't worry though, January is a long way away in terms of this particular development IME. Check out the 3yr old nappy wearers thread on here somewhere. They just seem to wake up one day and say that they now wear pants

AccidentalMum · 12/11/2008 22:24

Sorry, not quite clear....I have heard of pre-schools will accept that a non potty trained child will attend in pants and inevitably have accidents, which they will clear up. Not that I think it is unusual to 'allow' accidents!

I don't think 3 is delayed. Not these days. OUr mother's had more of a reason to get us out of nappies earlier (my mother always got vaguely obsessive as my kids approached 3).

Don't worry too much about the terminology of the Sure Start document. I posted that on a website for children with SN- the issue for you is that the nursery shouldn't be kicking up a fuss about nappies in a 3 year old!
