DIY reusable nappies?

treedelivery · 11/11/2008 21:54

Am going to use washables with next child - and am currently buying odd fleece nappies here and there to get a stash together to try.

Am going fleece as too tight to tumble dry and live in hard water area.

As regards liners and indeed shaped nappies - is there any reason why I shouldn't just buy fleece and make my own?

I was so put off by the flushable liners I bought, I think we'll use reusable, but they just look like bits of cloth!

My mum's a dab hand with a sewing machine and we have a big big soft fleece blanket that is looking more like a pile of 50 nappy inserts/liners/nappies to me!!

Any thoughts or experiences?

My MIL made me about 40 nappies from fleece and interlock. They were to a pattern a friend had made, loosely based on the motherease nappies, but to be used with a nappy nippa.

The nappies need to be overlocked around the edges - I hope your ma has an overlocker.

go for it - babeco sells good material for making them yourself if you run out of blankets!

Sorry, forgot to add - the top edge (the one that will be at the front) is left open so that as the output increases, you can put extra padding inside the nappy for extra absorbency.

I can probably give you more detail if you need it.

THIS is a fabulous site!!! They ship to the UK

treedelivery · 11/11/2008 22:28

am now getting really really over excited about patterns for cute bum!!! Thank you lillypie!! Can't believe can even buy the wrap fabric - although bet they are tricky to make. Might stick to the nappy to start with.....

No overlocker though thumbwitch. There must be a way around this. I get your meaning of leaving a seam open - a stuffable nappy. Marvelous. I KNEW i didn't want to spend a tenner a go on these things!

Poor mum - she's going to be busy!!!

there is a way round it - my MIL did a couple with seam binding. Much more effort though.

Some links for you....

lots of patterns

babeco fabrics

patterns and fabrics

more fabrics

[[http://www.pocket-tots.co.uk/fabric _kits.htm Pocket bots nappy making kits and individual items such as patterns, aplix, elastic - very funky nappies, lovely lady too .

Have a look on ebay - in the reusable nappies section - there is often PUL and elastic for sale on there. Sometimes they don't list for a few weeks so always worth checking later if you can't find any straight away - quite often it is Hilary from Pocket Bots who is selling it.

My friend was very successful in making some fleece pocket nappies for her tall DD - she couldn't buy pockets to fit.

sorry! Pocket Bots Link

treedelivery - I made a "lovable" last week (my stitching is not great, but it does the job and was on for 7 hours last night, stuffed with a couple of microfibre cloths and a terry booster, and still quite slim, and had a dry bum this morning, DD I mean ). I had an original one to get the template from, but it is the same as this, just "open" with one layer microfibre (thought I used old tea-towel as first attempt) and one fleece. And all the links BBM gave you are the ones I've bookmarked during my reserches (I know, very exciting way to spend my time...)

make your own. its soooo much cheaper especially if you already have the fabric.

don't forget these lovely instructions for a more economical cut.

treedelivery · 13/11/2008 15:24

Thank you everyone!!

Has anyone any tips on fabric supplies? I searched for microfibre but ended up looking at cleaning cloths. Mind you if they are the same fabric then they'll do nicely!

Have bought merino woll sleeping bags - am hoping they will help the nappies 'air' and stay dry.

Maybe someone needs to get knitting merino wool nappies. Such luxury!

only place I found microfibre after trawlin through cleanin cloth suppliers, is babeco, other places was either more expensive or out of stock

moocowme · 13/11/2008 20:19

it occasionally comes up on ebay. its just a much finer fleece than normal. I made my last batch of nappiew with just ordinary fleece and I would have to say i do not notice any difference between it and the more expensive microfleece I bought originally.

CarGirl · 13/11/2008 20:48

Have you seen the easy peasy eco bumble the are £3 each delivered and you just stuff them with what you want to use, they are a fab birth to potty nappy.

treedelivery · 14/11/2008 20:59

Thanks car girl have bought the eco bumble and also some soaker pad things to have a look at. Such good prices - cant imagine could make own microfibre soakers cheaper than £1.20 as it's £8-£9 metre from what I can see.

Am also thinking of buying some Babeco ex laundry service nappies and wraps - seem so so cheap. Not fussed they are used. Bargains!! Thats what motivates me!
Anyone used their wraps or nappies? any opinions?

sorry I don't know but I would buy some bamboo or hemp to make your own soakers - but ones that you can unfold to dry flat, they are very absorbant but slow drying unless dried in one layer.
