Weeing at nappy change time

DS 15 months has started the habit of weeing most times when I change his nappy. I use terry squares, so now keep the old one over his willy for a few seconds when changing it to try and catch any sudden wee. MIL says it's just the sudden rush of cold air to his bottom, which causes a shock reaction, and that it used to happen when she changed DH nappy, and on one occasion he nearly put the living room fire out (lol)! I'm not so sure, and wondered whether it was normal?

It's totally normal, especially with baby boys, I'm surprised it's taken so long for you to come across this, it was one of the first things I was warned of with ds.

bitofadramaqueen · 04/11/2008 14:39

Mine does it all the time. When he was a week old he managed to get the pee in his eye!

My ds got the seriously-up-himself-young-enough-to-be-my-son-full-of-attitude paediatrician in the eye at the ripe old age of 4 hours. Itr was then I realized that he and I (ds, not the paediatrician) were going to get along!

If you know he's going to wee when you take his nappy off, how about popping him on the potty. Not as any sort of potty training, just for fun.

My DD is very nearly one and absolutely loves sitting on her potty at nappy changes. We peer inside when she says it's time to get off and she's always thrilled if something has appeared inside. Being allowed to flush the loo when we've emptied the potty down it is the icing on the cake for her

Yes, it's quite normal for your 15 month old to have bladder control and prefer not to wee in his nappy. Introduce the potty at nappy change time and prepare to be amazed by your DS.

We get it everywhere too. DS's finest moment was the 6 week check where he sprayed; hit the wall, where it ricocheted back and got the feet of the beautifully dressed (younger than me) female GP.

Essie - that made me laugh!

talk to him when he does it and encourage the potty thing- he may be happy to go on it and save you some washing!

The joys of being a mum to boys

DS1's finest moment so far has been leaning against the bath willy in one hand and peeing against the bath. He's only 13months so prob too young for potty training but he certainly waits until the nappy is off

DS was born by C-section after 44 hours of labour. He came out literally weeing in his own mouth. DH caught it on camera or I'd never have believed him. Of course in the newborn days I remember more than once at 3am being rather pissed ticked off at having been peed on, pooed on and puked on. DS was probably thinking "woo trifecta!"

ThePenguinProject · 10/11/2008 23:40

Very, very normal. My DS had managed to wee on me three times by 8.50am today. Great start to my week.

DH opens the nappy, blows on DS's willy and then closes the nappy again quickly. Apparently this has the same effect as the cold air theory, so if they are going to go, this prompts them to do so. I never remember to do this. However the changing mat is on DH's side of the bed, so I have less incentive.

Waves at BDQ & Essie.

I never had this problem with ds, but from 6 months I used to sit him on the potty after meals because he would always do something. He's potty training himself now at 20mths, and like some others have said, it's great fun for them to use the potty and be all grown up.

ChillyTilly · 11/11/2008 13:12

Ooh, the dreaded trifecta!!!

Completely normal, OP! Little boys are pretty much the same as big boys. My DH gets the sudden urge to go and pee when he suddenly encounters cold air!!!

Course now my DS does the trick of waiting for a nice dry nappy before doing a poo. Not so bad at home, but annoying when out and about, having to go back and change him AGAIN!
