Nappy-off time - how do YOU do it?

I've tried nappy-off time twice now to let the air get to my DDs bits, and thus far she has wee'd and poo'd on her first try, and wee'd all over me and the carpet on her second!

So, how do you set up for it? Luckily with the poo I had put her on a Pampers bedwetters sheet but I was hoping not to have to do this each time because they are expensive and I am a cheapskate!

i used to put old sheet down then rinse and wash after i expected ds to have few accidents so put large sheet out cleaned up when needed then washed sheet and ready to go for the next time lol

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 29/10/2008 10:08

I wipe up alot!

But we have wooden floors and rugs so it easier.

Dd is 8 months and always has an hour of nappy off for about an hour before bed.

In the summer she would hardly wear one at all at home.

Old towels are useful, but once they are mobile (as dd has been since 5 months) then really it is just like having a puppy.

Old towels and those bedwetter things (cut into thirds). Boots sell some maternity mats for £2 a pack which I think are the same as bedwetter things but no idea how big/how many in pack.

I just didn't. I am an evil bad mum. Luckily he has never had nappy rash.

BroccoliSpears · 29/10/2008 13:07

I just leave him for a kick about on his changing mat.

bitofadramaqueen · 30/10/2008 19:13

Ditto changing mat. I've a boy with an impressive range though, which reminds me I need to change his curtains after he pee'd on them the other day

nowwearefour · 30/10/2008 19:17

never bothered. cant really understand the need unless there is a bout of v bad nappy rash.....

lollipopmothershalloweenghost · 30/10/2008 19:55

I had another go last night, much more succesful, one wee onto a towel. It looked like a little wee but by God did it soak the place!

Lots of kitchen towel, carpet cleaner and a scrubbing brush.

It is absolutely knackering so I'm now doing it for just a couple of hours a day.

And it isn't by choice! It is the only way I can stop my DS getting the worst nappy rash I've ever seen.

Roll on potty training.

moocowme · 01/11/2008 13:01

we have wooden floors and a very resiliant wool rug from ikea that can take anything and still look good.

I was contemplating making a nappy free rug with say a metre square of PUL with some bamboo terry inside and some microfibre on the top. put this down for DS to play on nappy free. I think I would have to have a coplu so that i could rotate them through the wash. what do people think? yes/no?

Anglepoise · 01/11/2008 13:06

moocowme I want one!

moocowme · 01/11/2008 13:11

pricing up all the materials it might cost say £20-25.

think of all those lovely colours and patterns you could use..................

TheProvincialLady · 01/11/2008 13:22

You can buy those from Blooming Marvellous and other places for less than £20. I had one for DS but TBH we didn't use it much, though it has come in handy for putting under his highchair to catch spills!

I couldn't take DS nappy off in this house in this weather as it is freezing even with the heating on. I don't think it is the end of the world if you don't do it.

lollipopmothershalloweenghost · 01/11/2008 13:29

Moocowme Brilliant idea, I'm going to go find one to buy, I love a good gimmick!

Ikea sell very cheap fleece blankets - not the best quality but will hold a pee or a poo for a few minutes before it soaks through to the carpet below. They also sell very cheap towels which are good wiper uppers.

beanbearer · 02/11/2008 00:01

My DS kicks about happily on his change mat while I shower in the morning. A doubled over terry nappy placed strategically beneath him catches most poos - and any wee he manages to fire beyond it doesn't cause too many problems on the bathroom floor. Might be different once he gets properly mobile. For now he's quite content chewing his toes!

twobecamefour · 08/11/2008 16:46

I have twins who are nearly 2, and have done nappy off time every day for an hour or so. Before they were walking we had a plastic tablecloth (Not one we used for the table!) on the floor, covered in a towel. When they were walking we moved into the kitchen to have it, as it is a laminate floor, and had a pile of terry nappies to mop up and antiseptic wipes for the floor. And also had a potty hanging around to catch what we could!

fledtoscotland · 08/11/2008 21:06

a large old bath towel has always worked for me but i must admit i'm lazy and they dont get nappy free time every day. too much washing

Anglepoise · 21/11/2008 19:15

Waterproof fabric + cheap fleece blanket + an old towel of DH's I've been looking for an excuse to get rid of + bias binding = four little mats that we can use for nappy-off time or travel change mats - thanks Moocowme for the idea! Think I'll make a bigger one for when she's mobile too ... maybe.

Now concentrating on feeling domestic-goddessy and trying to ignore the fact that it probably would have saved time and money (and certainly would have saved a nasty sewing machine injury ) to have just bought a few travel change mats off ebay (I am delighted to have got rid of that towel though ).

moocowme · 21/11/2008 20:36

i think you will find yours are more absorbant where as the travel change mats would need to wiped up and changed after any pee. and yours won't feel like sheets of ice on a bare bum with the very cold weather coming on.

Anglepoise · 21/11/2008 21:30

Well that's true It's nice fabric too. She managed to pee on two during tonight's nappy off session

moocowme · 21/11/2008 21:32

she has got the idea now
