Nurse just gave DS his jabs...

DS has just had his MMR jab, I forgot to take his red book with me. The nurse said he was due to have his MMR and another one, I can't remember the name of but sounded like 'pnemococial' I said I thought it was just the MMR, she was a bit vague but then said that it was the two so he had 2 jabs, one in each leg. I have just got home and the red book says he should only have had MMR - Has he had something he shouldn't have or am I worrying about nothing?

LIZS · 27/10/2008 17:18

Isn't that a Meningitis A ?

littleducks · 27/10/2008 17:19

I think dd had this, a jab that wasnt on the list at the back around the same time as mmr, i believe because it was a newly introduced jab it wasnt on the list

Hi my DS had jabs today @12 months its hib/Men C then @13months its MMR in one leg and then PCV (pneumococcal)in the other.

At my surgery they have the jabs on the computer system as they have to record batch numbers etc they won't mind if you call to check and will make you feel better.

bluestripes · 27/10/2008 17:29

Thanks - I just called and it was the PVC that he had aswell as the MMR. I then just did a quick google search and found lots of people stagger them rather than have them together as they can get a reaction....now I am worrying I should have been more clued up on this and maybe asked to stagger them...

is it just me who doesn't allow a single med into my child without asking 3 million questions about it?

bluestripes · 27/10/2008 18:00

Thanks for the supportive message needmorecoffee!!!! - just what i need when I'm already worrying - brilliant!!

It is now standard to give pneumococcal at the same time as the MMR, but a lot of red books still have the old schedules in them (DD's doesn't even have the current schedule for 2/3/4 month vaccinations in it, and she's only 6 months old -- I think our PCT is using up their stock of old red books before ordering more).

If you look online you are bound to find lots of people who stagger or delay, simply because very few people are going to post anywhere saying they have given their children exactly what was recommended - it's rather a non-story.

Seona1973 · 27/10/2008 19:32

immunisation schedule. I never staggered or delayed any jabs that dd or ds were due and they had the jabs on the same day.

kerryk · 27/10/2008 19:47

when you are put on the spot though it is not always easy to ask 3 million questions.

esp if you have a screaming toddler running around.

i think rightly or wrongly most people trust that doctors hv's etc know what they are doing.

mmelody · 27/10/2008 20:17

Well most people should get out of the habit of trusting without question. Doctors and nurses fuck up on a regular basis!

MrsJamesMartin · 27/10/2008 20:20

No one has "fucked up" though , MMR is given at the same time as the 3rd pneumococcal, its how the schedule is. Many red books are out of date.

Sawyer64 · 27/10/2008 20:29

Hear hear MrsJM.

Anyway surely its the Parents responsibility to obtain the available information about Child Imms. and by attending your appointment you are supposedly giving your informed consent.

As a mum, I realise its all a little baffling etc. but as a Nurse I am aware that the information on the new schedule is given in your Bounty Packs, available from the H.V at the Clinics, usually available at the doctors surgery etc.etc.

The practice Nurse should also be able to show you the information leaflet and go through it with you if you are worried.

needmorecoffee · 28/10/2008 08:34

Are Bounty packs still given out? Had dd 4 years ago and didn't get one but had them 16 years ago when numbers 1 - 3 came along.
We were in NIVU though. Maybe we got missed.
I never let dd have a single med without asking about it and checking it on the web. Last year in hospital a nurse attempted to give 20 times the normal dose of a blood pressure med. A mistake that could have killed dd. Still waiting for an apology from the hospital.
I check every medication myself in hospital and out cos I am paranoid.

reikizen · 28/10/2008 08:40

Flippin heck. Please don't let health professionals put things into your children's bodies when you don't know what they are or what they do! Mistakes can and do get made. We are only human after all.

cory · 28/10/2008 09:08

I always let mine have whatever the surgery said they were going to have. Maybe makes me a bad mother. Must be a lot of them around.

needmorecoffee · 28/10/2008 09:26

I am just paranoid given the hospital have attempted to kill dd off a couple of times now and finding I know more about epilepsy treatments than the average GP.

edam · 28/10/2008 09:30

to be fair, epilepsy is usually something that is managed in hospital i.e. outpatient appointments. Most GPs aren't well-versed in anticonvulsants and certainly wouldn't initiate treatment or adjust dosage without specialist advice.

I have epilepsy, once had trouble with a crappy pharmacist trying to switch my drugs 'in line with PCT protocols to dispense generics', my GP was horrified and said 'WE would never adjust your drugs without the consultant's advice, why on earth does a pharmacist think he can?'

cory · 28/10/2008 09:31

I know what you mean needmorecoffee, and since my child became disabled my confidence in doctors has also taken a bit of a nose-dive

Morloth · 28/10/2008 12:10

I am sure its fine bluestripes, we followed the Oz schedule which meant at one point there were 3 jabs all at once. With all the travelling we do he gets everything, I am not dicking around with delayed schedules.

Just keep an eye on him, not all kids have a reaction my DS never even got a temp.

Next time though if YOU are not comfortable then that is it don't let them do it, you can always go back again if after checking your info you decide to go ahead.

He will be fine.
