Disciplining a 9mo ??????

Ok I'm probably being nuts here but how do I explain ask persuade STOP DD from doing stuff she shouldn't be doing?

She keeps trying to eat the cats biscuits or play with their litter tray or bang the door on our TV cabinet.
I've tried No - she laughs, I've tried distraction - she ignores, I've tried moving her away from the items - she crawls back.

I understand she's too young for the likes of the naughty chair etc but is there ANYTHING I can do or will I just have to be on edge till she's older. - If so when should I be disciplining her?

I've got a travel cot I'll start setting that up more as she enjoys playing with toys in her cot in the mornings whilst I wake up so maybe?

yes that'll work.
until she realises she can climb/ scream, as well as crawl lol. 'i can see the cat food, but i can't get to it.... waaaaaaah'
but it'll give you some respite. maybe.

Oh god!! I don't know what else to do about it. The cats are confined to the front room overnight and in the morning (unless their outside) so they need their litterbox.

We were gonna move it all upstairs into the spare room and put the spare stairgate there but we are fostering cats now and can't.....

Spose i'll just have to keep running after her ;) lol

i bet you were desperate for her to crawl, too

LuckySalem · 25/10/2008 23:13

Someone told me once that you will your child to learn to crawl, walk and talk then as soon as they do you're telling them to sit down and be quiet!! ---- how true>! lol

Thankyou for this thread, LuckySalem - you've reminded me why I'm not having any more DC's

Please please please understand that a 9 month old ISN'T doing these things to be naughty. My advise would be to try and create an environment for your child where you hardly ever have to say no.

My DD hasn't got access to things I don't want her to touch, the dog's water bowl gets moved up onto the worktop when she's playing there, I have fitted cupboard locks, anything I haven't been able to baby proof has been hidden behing the sofa where she can't get to. I've blocked off access to this area with a coffee table and a big speaker underneath.

Babies often see being told no as a great game, which sometimes ends up turning into a negative thing, it can leave you feeling exhausted and resentful.

The last thing you want to do is create a self fulfilling prophecy where your child believes they're naughty because they're told no a lot.

Am sorry if I'm saying what others have said, I haven't had time to read through the entire thread.

9 months old babies are curious beings, enjoy watching her discovery of the world, they;re amazing!

LuckySalem · 25/10/2008 23:35

No I understand she's not being naughty I just couldn't think of a better word than discipline.. lol

I think the cats are just gonna have to let me know when they need to pee, drink, eat!! lol

Can you move the furniture around a bit to block the litter tray in? Cat's can wriggle through spaces too small for your dd so they'd prob still have easy access?

Acinonyx · 26/10/2008 08:15

Are you sure they really need an indoor litter tray? We've just moved and there is nowhere to put it that isn't annoying - so we've ditched it and they go outside.

LuckySalem · 26/10/2008 16:43

No they're mainly indoor cats... We don't have a cat flap or anything and the area isn't safe enough to allow them outside at night.
I had to rescue one of them from some kids who wanted to light his tail with a sparkler 3 nights ago

I keep meaning to move the furniture so i'll see if I can shift things for the cat litter... thanks for the tip.
