real nappies - how to start?

I am posting here because I am lazy and want someone to summarize for me, so please help

DD is almost 8 months and I am thinking of moving to real nappies.

Where and how do I start? What do I need? How much will it cost me? How often will I really have the washing machine going? Is it worth switching now that she is almost 8 months?

TIA

  1. Find a nappy advisor who can talk through the options and help you decide what nappies suit your needs most. look here

  2. Nappies, Wraps (unless you buy an all in one or pocket nappy), liners ( reusable fleece or flushable paper), bucket to store dirty nappies in, baby. Sanitiser is optional - many people do not use it. Your advisor will tell you what you need

  3. as little or as much as you want really. DD2s nappies cost me £30 second hand and that is all she has worn for the past 18m. You can buy second hand ver cheaply or splash out on designer nappies at £18 each . There are many new bargains to be found once you know what you need. Nappy advisors don't charge for their services.

  4. depends on how many nappies you have and how quickly they dry. I have two in cloth and wash every 2-3 days

  5. Yes definitely, she can go straight into size 2 nappies and if yoy have another DC you'll have them there waiting for when they are big enough. Many people don't switch until their DC is 6-8m.

I found that reading this forum obsessively and checking out the nappylady's website worked for me. Then I bought a big bundle of different secondhand nappies from usednappies.co.uk and currently working our way through them as DD grows into them. We are doing a wash a day at the moment but DD is only four weeks so tbh it's more because she pooes a lot and because she pukes on big adult things (like a sheet, duvet cover and mattress protector all at once ) that then need washing!

Thank you.
Going to get hold of a local nappy adviser.

yes its worth it, you could go straight to size 2 and in an older baby pockets are definitly worth a try . You can get a local advisor to come round or contact an online retailer who will happily give tailor made advice (there are a few of us who advertise in the small business classifieds).

Thanks NappyZone... don't happen to know anyone in NW London do you?

Just registered on the nappy lady, so maybe they'll put me in touch with someone.
