Please help me stop this diarrhoea!

My ds is 2 next month and has diarrhoea and sickness since friday night! I have rung the doctor and they just say "give fluids".

I have got to take a stool sample in tomorrow, in the meantime, has anyone got any advice?

Do what the doc says...sounds horible having to effectivly starve them, but it does work. Having said that, don't starve him for more than 24hrs at a time!

I do know what I'm talking about by the way....all my 5 had the sickness bug in the last week, and had to do it for them....and they all recovered within 3dys.

Oooh....is he holding anything down??? If he isn't even holding fluids, it may be worth seeing doc again in the morning, to rule out dehydration.

Fluids, dioralyte if you can get hime to drink it. Preferably nothing to eat at all until the vomiting stops. Definitely no dairy.

Hi, ds had a similar bug a few times when he was around one year old, it lasted just over a week and nothing helped - we just had to wait till it's over. I think dioralite is good, but it doesn't stop it, just helps with hydration.
I've heard that a tablespoon of pure, freshly squeezed lemon juice helps to stop it, but I think that's more if it has been caused by food or something, rather than a bug/virus. Sorry can't offer any more help, I know it makes you feel desperate and seems endless - it will get better!

there seems to be a bug going around, its a shame your little one has caught it, must be awful for you and ds, sorry no advice as i dont know what to suggest just wanted to say i hope he gets better real soon

My DD won't take the flavoured dioralyte, but she will take plain mixed with juice.

She is also more likely to take it if it is mummy's glass with a straw!!!

Have also heard that flat Coke is supposed to be very good. Definately NO dairy though.

my dd (9 months) has had this bug too, since weds. she was only sick twice on the friday but bad diarrohea. she went off her food then and refused to eat for 5 days. i have tried to stick to clear fluids but she got so so SO hungry so gave her watered down milk. now after 6 days she has stopped having such frequent diarrohea but still very watery - prob due to the lack of solids. took a stool sample in yesterday but it takes so long to come back!! terrible.

Flat coke is good....especially for heat stroke...I had to have that once whan I had too much sun, and it does help with rehydration...not sure if coke is recommended tho for under-ones

Coldiztmum sorry to hear your ds is poorly.

A really nasty rotavirus has been going round here this winter, almost everyone I know bubs has had it including mine.

The sickness seems to last 2-3 days but the diarrhoea carries on for a week - 10 days.

The main thing is fluids and then if they fancy it really plain dryish foods like toast, plain biscuits etc.

My ds ate nothing really apart from odd bits of toast for a week, I was getting quite worried, although he was still having BF so I wasn;t worried about dehydration. I think if not I would have asked GP for some dioralyte.

Hope he's on the mend soon.

Bananas are the only thing that work for DD1 if she has a bug. It's the one thing her tummy can cope with, and has a binding effect elsewhere. Also, potassium is important for their stomachs IIRC and lots of it in bananas/blackcurrant.
