Potty vrs toilet trainer seats

I was thinking of bypassing potties and going straight for toilet trainer seats with dd as she likes copying what she's sees us doing. Has anyone any experience of this or do we need to do the potty thing first and then transfer to the loo?

depends on the child. ds used a potty, then the toilet (had a trainer seat, but only used it once or twice). ds's little friend went straight on the toilet (no trainer seat). suggest a step for the toilet though initially, it helps them get up there.

DD2 doesn't like the potty she prefers to copy us and DD1 so she has gone straight to a trainer seat (padded with handles).

ds (just 2) uses the toilet with no trainer seat - if they have their legs wide enough and hold on at the sides or at the front then they can balance pretty well. He only uses the potty to pee in but he does like to stand up to do that.

Used trainer seats with both DCs and didn't have any problems. I never liked the idea of washing a pooey potty

We have these on all our loo's much better than trainer seats-especially for boys we found.

Never used a potty with DS. Saw it as a pointless step we'd have to wean him off of.

Thanks for all advice so far ladies. Much appreciated.

My mum prefers to take Naomi to the toilet to avoid the cleaning. We started this way then learned that they only offer potties at nursery so we thought we needed to encourage that. I also find that she can stand up / sit on her own with a potty (and we can put it infront of the TV when we are struggling to get her to use it).

We had both. A potty in her room and toilet seat in the bathroom. Then ditched the potty. Worked well.
