Real nappies & newborn poo...

Really want to start using real nappies as early as possible - have got recommendation from Nappy Lady for bimbles which look lovely so thought I might get a few of them plus a couple of other newborn ones (any recommendations welcome!) to start off with BUT... am a bit worried that the meconium will ruin the lovely white fluffy nappies with stains I will never be able to get out! Should I use disposables to start with (really don't want to) or will the bimbles be ok? Or do I get some terries - am a bit scared of all the folding involved to be honest...

the bimbles should be fine, though we found plain old cotton terry was best for newborns rather than putting a manmade fibre next to the skin. Plus newborn and young baby poo sticks better into terry loops than to fleece. Good nappies are quick flips, little lambs. We find quick flips best as they are soooo absorbent.
meconium washes out.

Are they btp or sized bimbles? You may find the btp are very bulky on a newborn and decide to hold off for a while. If not, don't worry about all the stains - IME meuconium does stain but the stains will come out if you hang them in the sun (not easy at this time of year but even old stains sun out).

Folding is really easy - honest! You don't need to buy terries either really - some people just used folded muslins for the first few weeks. You can even just fold them into an absorbant pad and place a wrap over the top.

Fantastic newborn nappy would be Sandy's extra small. They are excellent, good containment, very good fit, excellent resale value - some on MN classifieds when I last looked. You would need xs aiflow wraps too though but again, they have excellent resale value.

If you ask on the general nappy chat thread you'll get answers from people who are new to cloth and are using it with their newborns.

I used cloth from the moment DD2 was born and intend to with DC3 next month, I use a paper liner to catch the poo for the first few days (while like tar!) and never had a problem with stains. I have a mix of newborn nappies and muslins as back up/at home and my favourites are the kisaluvs as they have the umbilical cord snap closely followed by ME xs sandies, ellas bumhuggers, diddy diapers, little lambs and daisy diapers are also in my collection and work great but aren't as cute .

It was the newborn sized bimbles - definately don't want BTP nappies as think even the sized ones look fairly bulky on a little newborn. Will investigate the Kisaluvs and sandies as well I think. Think I will invest in 15-20 nappies of maybe 3 diff types to start off with.

Babykind are doing XS airflow wraps for £4 in their bargains link, they are brand new so i'd def recommend going there if you want XS wraps.

XS Sandy's are brilliant, very slim fitting but if u go for them I suggest getting some boosters as there's not much of the XS and my DD can soak thru in about an hour and a half.

Newborn bimbles are lovely

Answering BigBadMouse's comment on size, there's another thread near the top on smaller nappies for newborns.

FWIW, we had a one off meconium incident in the delivery room which DS had to deal with whilst I was being prepped for theatre!! And that was it. We used nature baby (or whatever them eco disposables are called) for the first two weeks anyway because DS was too small for the real nappies. (And now we've changed to the pop-in which is a BTP but will go down really small; next baby will have them from birth.)

Essie3 · 20/10/2008 16:13

Oh, for photos of the pop-in on the teeniest setting (well, almost - it goes smaller if you put the tabs one over the other) see my profile pics!

I've used xs sandys (fab ) and muslins til dd could get into size small nappies (at 5wks). from wk 3 I boosted the muslins with cheap microfibre cleaning cloth from tesco and only use fleece liners to keep littlu bum dry (and I always said i woulnd't do folding, but i actually enjoyed it and not as diffcult as it seems!) the pop-in is btp, but actually not bulky at all and used it I think in wk 2. but as I've learnt at cost, try different ones first once baby's here, not all fit all babies...

You can always use nappy liners to catch poo and make it all less sticky, meconium doesnt last very long altho runny yellow poo can also go trough liners, when not pooed i wash them in washing machine and reuse them. Its just a bit less messy.
