Nappy rash patch won't go away, it's been three months, any more ideas?

DS has had a patch of nappy rash at the top of his leg since he was six months old and started teething. It has been there for three motnhs, getting better and worse but never going away. Now it seems to have little red patches within the rash patch and looks much angrier.

So far we have tried:

  • only using cloth (possibly got a little worse)
  • not using cloth (for three weeks)(no difference)
  • sudocrem (little difference)
  • bepanthen (some difference, but it didn't last
  • metanium on advice of GP who thought another patch might be thrush - the thrush seems to have cleared up, the angry patch has now got worse
  • not using wipes, using cotton wool (can't see any difference)

He really scratches at himself when he doesn't have a nappy which curtails nappy free time somewhat - despite cutting his nails often, he has actually broken skin by scratching

Any more ideas?

Have you tried Doublebase

DD was prescribed it and it's brilliant! It's a light cream, but virtually water proof...

Think H/V can prescribe it.

Sounds like you have a diagnosis, but just want to add that my DS couldn't tolerate a) wipes b) cloth nappies and c) eco-type disposables. Have you ever tried the Pampers/Huggies type of nappy because it made a huge difference to DS. (I know. I'm sorry, but it was that or EC with us)

tcarter I would ask for a referral to dermatology dd has been as she got psorasis, they will have seen cases of what she has before and will have lots of different small samples to give you to try, that way you get to find out what will help her most.

I just share your frustration at how long it has taken for them to take it seriously & do a swab & work out a diagnosis!!!!

oh help that picture looks like dd's rash too - she's been on Timodin for three weeks and no improvement. Will go to docs tomorrow and probably irritate them immensely by asking for a swab!

tcarter - hope you will read this...bit late but I suffer from seborrohic dermatitis and have discovered that apple cider vinegar dabbed onto the area will clear it completely within 3 days. Warning though. It is acidic and could sting, so you might want to experiment with diluted solutions. I wash my face in it every day to keep it at bay and wish I could come up with some way of marketing it as it works miraculously.
good luck!

breaghsmum, a big thank you to you! My daughter had a rash appear yesterday from no-where all around her ladybits (worst right above them Confused) and really raw and red, neither Metanium nor Sudocrem helped at all. I applied aloe vera gel (99.9%) last night and today it's MUCH better and is clearing up more with each application. I don't know what kind of rash it is but the aloe vera really works. Also I think it's soothing, as you'll know if you've ever used it on sunburn. Cheers :)

I have to confess to normally being a 'read and run' user of mumsnet but joined specially so I could say a bit thankyou for the advice here! We tried all the usual over the counter remedies for nappy rash, plus seemingly endless amounts of nappy free time but nothing worked, we've now swapped to tesco own nappies for overnight (too bulky for all day but sooo much better than pampers baby dry for a 12hr stint)and the aloe vera vaseline has worked a treat. Thanks!

It's also worthwhile to try silver liners or coolmax lined nappies. We couldn't be happier with them. DD has very sensitive skin and any cloth could irritate her skin but silver liners and coolmax nappies worked wonders on her!
