Muslins or terry for a newborn?

I've got some shaped nappies left over from dd but she was in disposables until she was nearly 1. I think I am going to use either muslin or terry squares for next baby until he/she grows into what I already have. Does anyone have a recommendation? Are terry squares very bulky on a tiny baby?

Hi there!

Yes terry can be bulky on a tiny baby but you can get 40cm squares now. Bamboo terry squares are much flatter and 80% more absorbant than cotton they come in 40cm squares too. Muslin squares are ultra thin but not sure how long they would be asorbant enough. i buy from www.babeco.co.uk, a social enterprise selling all kinds of nappy stuff - even the small sizes. Hope thsi helps?

Thanks. I have some bamboo inserts for my wonderoos and they are very stiff compared to the terrys but much more absorbent. I will probably get a mixture. Perhaps I could use muslin with terry insert from my pocket nappies. I like the look of the wraps on babeco.

I used muslins with a folded flannel liner/ booster for a couple of weeks on my 6lb DD1 but they would have just been silly on DD2. The suggestion of bamboo ones is really good, they are much thiner and easier to fit. 50cm terries could be used in pockets later perhaps?

I'm still using muslins on DD, 5wks old - I've started boosting them with microfibre cleaning cloth or face flannel and still work fine for now.

Mothercare or boots own squares are thinner than the errr...better quality squares. IME 40cm was too small for a newborn and very hard to fold. A boosted muslin usually works well. I use bamboo terries on my babyDS quite often.
