The rules on a second hand mattress?

I have just brought a 2nd hand crib with mattress, now i was going to buy a new mattres but it has cleaning instructions. It is a mamas and papas with removable cover and the inner can be cleaned with antibacterial wash. If i washed the cover on 60 and washed the inner with antibacterial then maybe wipe down with some milton, do you think this is ok?? or am i being stupid and cheap and should sling it and go and buy a new one?

def. buy new.

RedOnHerBeheadedHead · 08/10/2008 20:48

new one

SmugColditz · 08/10/2008 20:52

look here

My children's mattress was second hand to start with and I used it for both (was just too poor to do otherwise) but it was sprung - this doesn't seem to present the asame risks.

hiya, just popping in to get an opinion on 2nd-hand mattress dilemma...

a co-worker of my dh has given us a bed for our ds1, 2 years old. and the bed came with a foam mattress. my dh seems to think its totally harmless, and it may very well be. ((hence why i'm here)). the co-worker has used it for 2 of his kids i think, PLUS he got it from yet another family that used it for their child.

now...since i don't know the history and just cos i'm a bit weird about things like this, i'm ready to buy a new mattress (even if a new cheapo foam one, just as long as its not been used by soooo many others)). Now, dh seems to think he can just get the steamer out and give it a "clean" since its just a foam mattress.

ok, what would you all do??? Help!!

ty ty!

New, new, new.
Neever reuse a matress. It only needs a microscopic spore to cause problems.

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 29/10/2008 11:08

We co-sleep and we certainly haven't brought a new mattress for our bed for each baby.

If it had a washable pvc cover then it will be fine imo. As any 'microscopic spores' will not be able to permeate it.

Up to you though, lots of people will argue otherwise.

MuwahahahaMom · 29/10/2008 11:11

co-sleeping and sharing mattresses within the family is totally fine by me. its just that the mattress in question, i suspect, is jsut a piece of uncovered foam (yucko) and have been used by two other families' kids! ((neither of which i know at all!!))

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 29/10/2008 11:14

Sorry MuwahahahaMom, that was addressed to the op, I hadn't read your post.

I think in your case (an uncovered foam matress) I would buy a new one.

MuwahahahaMom · 29/10/2008 12:56

thanks so much for your opinions/suggestions. i feel the same, hands down about buying a new one...i just needed a bit more "behind me" to argue the point to the dh.

take care!
