Swapping rooms with your children - would you? Could you?!

Our HV came today for the first time, and as we were discussing ways to wean ds2 off the breast at night, she said why don't i sleep in the boys' room and they sleep in mine...well I'm going to try not sleeping in the big bed tonight, as I wonder if ds2 will sleep better without my smell nearby (he has been clamped to my nipples for the last few weeks - teething? comfort? Not sure - but I'm ill and need to sleep)

but she actually suggested we swap rooms.

I'm not sure - it has occurred to me before, as I have the large room (though we all sleep in one big bed) and they have a tiny room with bunks which aren't slept in, and loads of toys so it is very cramped.

However I don't think the double bed will fit in there and I really don't want to sleep in a bunk! Plus there is all the other storage to consider, clothes are all in my room atm, etc etc. And the only bathroom leads directly off it.

I quite fancy having a tiny room of my own but is this strategy likely to enable them to sleep without me, as this is what I'd like to happen eventually.

surely she meant for a nght or 2.

I don't know if it will work, but we have the smallest room and our bed just about fits wall to wall with a toddler bed next to it!

It was partly because it's quieter at the back of the house and the road disturbs me, dcs sleep through anything, but also they play a lot in their rooms now they're older. I don't care that I have to climb into bed.

Makes sense to me for the children to have the biggest room. They play and 'live' in their bedroom a lot more than adults and have lots of stuff.

We've alwasy done it. Don't know about the weaning issue, though.

Dh and I have the middle room, 3 dc have the largest room and 1 dc has the smallest room.

Hmm no she definitely meant for keeps. I would actually really like it, I think - but for the fact that the main bedroom is so functional in other respects - it has all the cupboards, a whole wall of fitted wardrobes, two big chests of drawers (my clothes, their clothes) and all the bedding. Plus the airing cupboard full of towels, and the bathroom.

I could no way fit all those in the tiny room - it's got the bunks, and a ceiling height dresser (one of those old school dressers, weighs a ton, can never be moved!) which contains lots of the toys. There's literally only about four foot square of floor apart from that.

I suppose all the clothes and so on would have to stay in the main bedroom and it would get absolutely muddled if we kept all the toys in there too.

It's a flat so they mainly fetch toys from their room, bring into the living room and play in there. If they used the big bedroom instead it might keep the living room clearer but I doubt they would play in there - they want to be near me. like I am any fun!

I do hate it being at the front though, I don't sleep well with the road outside.

Will require a major rethink if we're going to do it, but it might work...thanks for all the ideas.

We swapped, so that the girls had the big (huge) room and we had a small one. It's brilliant - theirs is big enough for all their clutter and still has enough play space that they can be packed off up there when they have friends round.

The fitted wardrobes in the room that is now the kids bedroom have become toy cupboards, wardrobes for them, storage for bedding and one full-length hanging rail of my stuff is still in there. It's really good having so much storage space in there.

We did end up buying new wardrobes for our room. We also chucked out some old, ill-fitting furniture, so that it is efficiently arranged. It's cosy and warm and a lovely place to escape to.

I am in the smallest room and my daughter has the larger room. Because she has more stuff and I only have my dog in with me lol

Overmydeadbody · 09/10/2008 19:30

It makes sense for me too that the children get the bigger room, after all they spend a lot of time in there paying and need space to play, all I use my bedroom for is sleeping and using the bed and storing my clothes. I never use it during the day.

I have already told DS that when we move house (soon I hope) he will have the bigger room.
