What do you do with your child/ren when you fill up with petrol?

Dh says he has always taken ds with him when he goes to pay. I try to avoid filling the car with petrol, but when I have to I have always left him (locked) in the car . We now have a dd to factor in and I am in a quandry about whether it is acceptable or safe to leave them. What does everyone else do? Ds is 4, dd 6 months.

Leave them in the car - never thought of anything else

I try to go to pay at the pump garages. Or use a supermarket chain where you fill up and drive up to a little window to pay. Otherwise I use small garages and leave DD in the car. If I have to use a large petrol station and I have to go in the shop to pay, I lock DDs in the car.

themoon666 · 09/10/2008 10:58

I've always left mine in the car. After I'd fill up, I'd open the door to get handbag and shout 'behave yourselves for 2 minutes'.

Worked for me.

Geepers · 09/10/2008 11:11

Always leave mine in the car, and always unlocked. If someone wants to kidnap my kids they are welcome to them ;)

bozza · 09/10/2008 12:08

Forgot to add that mine is unlocked as cannot manage to get children to sit dead still so they set alarm off.

EdithsMummy · 09/10/2008 12:10

Geepers - lol!
I always use pay at pump - it's much easier.

noonar · 09/10/2008 12:28

um, statistically speaking, is there much liklihood that car might catch fire on forecourt?? didnt occur to me! always leave in car, but always in sight.

themoon666 · 09/10/2008 17:34

In all my 47 years I've NEVER seen a car on fire on a forecourt. I wonder what the statistics say.

Only car i've ever seen on fire anywhere was my own and I was driving through town at the time - moving. Just got DD out of her seat as the flames licked out around the bonnet!

If the children are with me they stay in the car.

Leave dd in the car with the door locked.

Hulababy · 09/10/2008 21:11

Have always taken DD in wth me, even when she was a baby. None of the petrol stations here have windows that allow my car to be visible, and never felt comfortable leaving her.

PictureThis · 09/10/2008 21:12

I do what TheMoon666 does. Never thought to do anything otherwise

changer22 · 09/10/2008 21:16

I go to Tescos pay at the pump or Asda drive thru.

I try and fill up the car when DH is with us so one of us is with DC.

I know it's highly unlikely but I am really scared about the car bursting into flames and everyone stuck in their carseats. My fear hasn't been helped by being on planes when they are refueling and they announce that you shouldn't have your seatbelt on!

Smithagain · 09/10/2008 21:24

Buy petrol when I'm out on my own, as much as possible. Leave them in the car if I can see them. I don't lock the doors, though.

"Leave ds in the car and wave and blow kisses to him while i wait in the queue. Sometimes I play peek-a-boo by bending down and jumping up quickly and waving frantically, sometimes i pull faces to him."

This is fantastic. Does anyone ever say anything to you or maybe just call the men in white coats??
