Out of interest, how often do you "check" your sleeping children?

That's it, really.

Unless one of mine is unwell or upset, I never "check" between bedtime and waking-up time - which is 10-12 hours at a stretch. (Actually, that sounds quite a long time, put like that). Anyeway, have 3 children aged 8, 5 and 3.

But some of the things posters put on other threads make me wonder if this is highly unusual behaviour. Is it?

Never, unless they wake up or are ill.

missblythe · 08/10/2008 08:54

Never, unless she is ill. DD's bedroom door makes such a racket I'd wake her every time.

eidsvold · 08/10/2008 08:57

At least one of us looks in on them when we go to bed - and unless they are ill and restless waking - not again until usually dd1 wakes us. Dh always - me most times.

THey are 6, almost 4 and 18mths old.

I check dd1 (4.9) before i go to bed, make sure the right way up and covered. Don't check on dd2 (13mths) as she would wake up and not want to go back to sleep.

Once, just before I go to bed and as I am putting out their uniform for the next day. Mainly just to move dd2 out of dd1's bed. Dd2 is afraid of the dark and dd1 lets her fall asleep in her bed. It's heart meltingly sweet seeing them cuddled up together.
Never go into ds' room as he would wake up.

I used to go in and check DS two to three times an evening when he was DD's age. BUT he was a sound sleeper. With DD I brave to enter once just before bed to check they are both ok and re tuck them in. Anymore and I'll have two wide awake eyes imploring me to pick her up and rescue her! They are nearly 4 and 1.

thequietone · 08/10/2008 09:04

Once before I go to bed, around 10.30pm. Just for my own peace of mind, and to re-tuck DS1 as he's also a wriggler.

I also like to sniff his hair before bed because he always smells so delicious in a warm kind of way.

Usually after dd has gone quiet after endless calling and coming out of her room I check to see if she is really asleep!

Then about an hour later to put a pull up on her!

Then before I go to bed

Then in the night if I go to dd2

Thats a lot isn't it

As for dd2 - rarely at all, she's such a light sleeper that I don't want to wake her. Mind you she wakes about twice a night, so I do see her at some point!

ledodgy · 08/10/2008 09:30

Once when I go upto bed.I go into their rooms kiss them and whisper 'I love you' in their ears.

HensMum · 08/10/2008 09:32

Rarely. I'm always worried about waking him up! Plus, we still have a monitor (DS is nearly 1) so I can hear if he needs me. And he has a sleeping bag so I know he's always warm enough.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 08/10/2008 09:33

Never really. I make sure that dd1 is asleep when I go to bed. But thats it.

If they are ill I go in more often. Maybe about twice before bed.

thehairybabysmum · 08/10/2008 09:52

i go in when i go to bed too, not to check though, just too look and maybe rearrage if they are upside down or whatever.

They are so lovely when asleep so not really about checking IYSWIM.

Elffriend · 08/10/2008 10:02

Never. DS WOULD wake up and then the world would end.

Elibean · 08/10/2008 11:11

I check both dds before I go to bed:

dd1 for being right way up and covered

dd2 for being right way up and having humidifier/temperature of room ok (she needs both ok to sleep through, due to floppy larynx etc)

topkitty · 08/10/2008 12:57

I always pop in around 10.30 - 11 as we're going to bed. making sure they're covered & snuggled up. last but not least give them a night night kiss. lovely seeing sleeping quiet children!
