My ds is 4 and I want him to speak portuguese. I need to find resourses and teaching materials. Anyone knows where can I get it? I ma brazilian and I want to teach my son. For many reasons I found hard to speak to him in Portuguese at first, now I hope it is not too late.

See other thread. My point is flippant, I know, but often the easiest place to start is in the nearest big Portuguese (or brazilian) community. In London, that's the Vauxhall and Stockwell area of Lambeth.

There's also at least one Portuguese language TV station (number 801, maybe?) available on Sky plus. Better than nothing.

dalu · 06/10/2008 15:37

Cheers MIFLAW, I live in Manchester,no sky tv ( virgin TV). I looked in the internet for Saturday school like they have in London. I FOUND NOTHING!

I want to make learning Portuguese fun rather than a chore for my ds.

These things are pretty London-centric, it's true. Is there no area of Manchester where Portuguese families live and/or work?

If not, it's always worth contacting the Embassy to see if they have a cultural wing or arms-length department (like the Institut Francais or the Goethe Institut.) Even if they're based in another town (again, london and Edinburgh are faves) they might have lists of approved suppliers, contacts, etc. The British Council, for example, publishes free (I think) teaching materials for English as a foreign language.

Amazon, of course, has national websites, if you know which books/cds/dvds etc you might want. The same will probably be true of the big national bookstores.

As you've probably guessed, I know nothing about Portuguese, but these are the sort of lines of enquiry I have been pursuing for French.

If all else fails, in a culture like Portugal, the Catholic Church is probably worth a go ? if they do mission work, they will probably include a linguistic aid programme and may produce their own materials.

the embassy ans consulate are extremely unhelpful in every way

btw as tip for learning music always helps particularly with children

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 06/10/2008 16:41

Fully agree with point re music - either children's songs or "feel-good", singalong, 50s and 60s pop (ie catchy tunes and words you can't get out of your head once you've heard them twice!) might go down well.

dalu · 07/10/2008 11:30

Thank for that [grim]. I decided to create my own Saturday school. I will put an advertisement at my space and other brazilian chatweb so I can gather other parents with similar problems. [grim]

FWIW I have just started attending a French Saturday playgroup which I found out about via Mumsnet. The posting is on this list (French playgroup/groupe de jeux francophone Crystal Palace). Don't know whether the organisers (both mums of young children) would be any help to you in terms of advice?

Good luck with it - sounds great!

Hi Dalu, I taught Portuguese in London primary schools and we used to get books from the university library or www.grantandcutler.com/ Grant and Cutler. Also I used this website: www.enchantedlearning.com it's got kiddy stuff in Portuguese. (It's 20 US dollars for a year which isn't much as there's loads of downloadable resources in Portuguese, things to colour in etc).

Boa sorte
