Baby swimming classes and risk of water intoxication??

My DS (13 months) has been doing swimming classes for a few months and has been fine and enjoyed them. I have just read in 'what to expect in the first year' about a risk of water intoxication in babies who are put under the water in such classes. I am now really concerned about taking my DS again. Does anyone know anymore more about this?

never heard of it.

Oh that book is stupid on lots of things IMO. Just one big guilt trip, as is their pregnancy one.

I really wouldnt worry about it.

They'd have to drink a lot of ater to get this surely? I've heard of adults getting this after drinking pints of water on hot days but how long are babies in the water for?

Even if this is a genuine concern rather than scaremongering, water intoxication is mostly an issue in younger babies (under six months or so). A 13-month old could easily be drinking a reasonable amount of water a day anyway so a few gulps of pool water won't make an appreciable difference.

soory not water intoxication - it is the asthma link that puts me off

link slow to open

When baby inhales water into its lungs and dies it's called "drowning". Water intoxication is drinking too much water and upsetting the body's electrolytic balance.

I've just paid £100 for a swim course for a 7 month old and now see this! Another thing to worry about!

MrsBadger · 30/09/2008 12:03

burn the book

now

immediately

the publishers should be blardy shot, scaremongerers that they are

orangina · 30/09/2008 12:11

crap book, burn it as MrsB says.... both my dc have been to swimming classes since 6 months old. Both love them, dd now swimming (3.5), and ds a complete waterbaby (20 mos). Underwater all the time.....

belgo · 30/09/2008 12:15

what exactly do babies do in baby swimming classes? I've always taken my children swimming very regularly from the age of four months or so, but I can't imagine what they would do that's different in a swimming class.
