What's the going rate for babysitting these days?

We've just arranged to go out on Saturday and DD will be being babysat by someone who isn't family. Never done this before so am a little nervous. Anyway, I have no idea what the "norm" rate is for babysitting. It's DD's godmother and good friend of mine and am 75% sure she'll prob refuse to accept any money but as this is the first step towards leaving DD with someone non-family, I'm going to need to know this soon anyway.

We'll be going out 7.30ish and prob be back 11 if that has any bearing on the matter

I think it depends on where you live.

Doubt v much that a godmother and friend would accept money. I know I wouldn't... Why don't you just leave her some yummy food or crisps and dips and a dvd?

£7 an hour where I am too. Bloody loads. I have to babysit to be able to afford to pay a babysitter!

It's £8/hour in London which is a bit crazy as that's what you pay when they're looking after awake children!

Am in London - never pay or been paid £8 an hour...

And I still feel mortified about accepting £7 an hour tbh.

Round here there is a baby sitting circle where you babysit for each other and collect "tokens" so others can babysit for you in return for free!

Can she come round to my house???

I second the chocs/dvd idea if it's a friend. My friend and I babysit for each other but will usually leave a bar of chocolate and some magazines or something. Before I had dd when I babysat for a (different) friend, they would leave me a box of maltesers or something and tbh I quite enjoyed just sitting in someone else's house reading my book in some peace and quiet (DH plays loud war/driving games on xbox!) and was pleased to do it for them so they could get out together.

Enjoy your night out

Cheers for all the replies, it's very helpful. £7 though!!!! Blimey.

When I asked my friend she did joke about me leaving out the Chips Ahoy cookies she'd just bought us back from her hols. So will prob go with the nice chocs/magazine

It's a night out with the In-Laws, so only way to do it is with copious amounts of alcohol making it a great night out!!

£5 per hour seems the norm here.
