What is your 4 year old's diet like?

I'm interested to know what other 4 year olds will/won't eat.
My ds1 (4 1/2) has a healthy but very boring diet. Plenty of fruit, a bit of raw veg, pasta (occasionally with tomato sauce or pesto but usually just cheese), bread, crackers, cereal, cheese. (He will, of course, eat anything sweet - biscuits, chocolate etc.)
Until about age 2, he ate anything, then gradually he 'went off' things until we were left with a pretty narrow range. He's reluctant to try anything new and doesn't eat cooked veg.
I know toddlers are known for fussy eating, but at what age do they usually start eating a bigger variety again?

well my 5 year old hasn't improved much

notsoteenagemum · 26/09/2008 23:21

DS 4.1 will eat most foods now, he has only started eating meat other than mince over the past 12 months though but I have always served it on his plate. He eats any fruit though and any vegetable except mushrooms. He eats healthier and more varied than DD 8 and DH 30!

He is fussy with some things but they are odd things anyway,
he won't eat anything in a shape eg gingerbread man
he won't eat chocolate biscuits only plain
he won't eat melted cheese
he won't eat any sandwich other than cheese

He is ok with trying new foods I have a rule where they have to taste before saying they don't like something but they can spit it out if they hate it.

she has a very very limited diet
bread cereal cheese salami ham
sausages potatoes fish fingers chicken pasta

no veg! we smuggle fruit in the form of puree tubs and school bars

any tips greatfully received!

my 4yo twins eat pretty much anything they're given, with the exception of tuna (DT1) and mushrooms (both) so far - in fact school dinners are now the highlight of their day!

My ds has been a fussy eater since he was 18 months old.

He still eats a limited range of food but has really branched out (for him, that is) in the last 4 months or so. He is 4.7 now

But of course he has also refused to eat one or 2 of his favourite (my standby) meals

littlerach · 27/09/2008 17:55

Dd2 is just 4 and will eat anyhting.

before you all jump on me, Dd1 is 7 and is fussy and drives me insane

SpookyMadMummy · 27/09/2008 18:05

My dd2 is 4 and will eat most things except tinned tomatoes and mushrooms. She even loves curry and spicy foods.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 27/09/2008 18:18

it would be easier to give you a list of what dd1 will eat;

pancakes with strawberry syrup
melted ice cream
strawberries
cheese and tomato pizza
cheese sarnies
cheese pasta
fish fingers
some cereals
porridge
most fruit and veg
home made burgers
lettuce
ham

she wont entertain anything with onions, peppers, spices, mince, roast beef, meat on the bone, buttered toast, musli, sweet potato, roast potato, gravy, fried eggs, fish , tomato based pasta, bacon.................

somethings she likes one day the next day she wont eat them.

panckaes, fishfingers, pizza and home made burgers are the staple of her diet, but at least she is eating which with dd1 is a good thing.

dd2 doesnt like, well, nothing really. i have yet to find something she wont eat.

janx · 27/09/2008 18:28

wow -you have a child that eats lettuce

AbbaFan · 27/09/2008 18:32

I am really lucky with my 4 y/o as he eats all kinds:

Korma
Chilli (lightly spiced)
Stir Frys
Casseroles
Pesto pasta
all soups

Not really anything apart from Mushrooms (seems to be a theme here!)

I've got 3 1/2 yr old twins who have their dislikes (ds2 won't eat eggs, dd won't eat cucumber) but eat most things and always have done.
Ds1 is 6 and eats fish, fishfingers, eggs omlette or scrambled, chicken nuggets that I make, baked beans, bread, crackers, cake(!), potatoes, plain pasta, peas, berries, yoghurt/ice cream, nuts, seeds, and marmite sandwiches. He has aspergers syndrome and I think we've done well to get him this far - it was far more limited 2 years ago. What we did was stop trying to get him to try stuff and stop talking about food, just kept putting it onb a plate near him and after months he tried a bit. I give him multii vits to stop me worrying and I feel thankful that he's a strapping healthy looking boy.
My dh didn't vary from a limited diet for 18yrs, but he left home and felt silly asking for an omlette in indian restaurants and now eats anything.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 27/09/2008 18:34

yes janx she loves lettuce. and most things green. broccolli is another firm favourite. try getting fat into her though and she will run a mile

janx · 27/09/2008 18:42

my dd - just turned 4 - has turned quite fussy in the last 6 months. She does pretty well - eats brocoli, celery, peas - hates carrots and mushrooms and raw tomatoes. Will eat chicken, fish, redmeat. Loves fruit of all sort - plain yogurt.
DS - 9 months will eat anything - even paper

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 27/09/2008 18:45

oh paper i forgot that. yes dd1 is quite fond of paper

jollydo · 28/09/2008 23:42

Thanks for all that. It's interesting that some people have one fussy and one not-fussy eater, so I suppose it can't all be down to our influence. I'm really not sure whether ds1 has become fussy because of something we have or haven't done, or whether it's just something that some children go through (and hopefully please come out of!) I certainly started off doing what I thought would encourage a not-fussy eater - loads of variety when he was a baby. Trouble is, he ate anything I gave him (except potato) until around 2 and then it all changed. At least I know he's not alone.

(ds2 has started off fussier than ds1 was, but eats pretty well so far. And very inconveniently his favourite is potato while he doesn't like pasta - ds1's staple! I think cheese sandwiches are about the only meal they BOTH eat!)
