A friend of mine is struggling with a new baby that is constantly crying and won't be comforted by anything that I've or she's tried. Can anyone give me the classic symptoms of colic and also what can be done to help relieve them.
ALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE PLEASE!

Gently roll baby over from side to side and then let baby lie flat on your knee, lift up and that should move the blighted wind!! In response to the "ad" below we tried it once and made our eldest vomit for scotland! My granny used to put a warm bed pig (in those days, no adays hot water bottle) wrapped in a towel round my dads tummy, apparently he was a right colicky baby!!

Hi there. The Colief message has now been deleted after various emails asking us to do this. They have been contacted and informed of this. In their defence they did contact us first and we told them they could use the boards if they became members.Perhaps we shouldn't have directed them towards the boards but the way they sold it was that they had some new research that could help relieve colic - something we thought our members would want to have access to. I think the way they presented it was the biggest problem and showed a lack of understanding of the sort of site we are. If they'd come on and said hey we know life is hard when your child ahs colic and there's this new research and we don't want to be pushy but our stuff really works, I don't think people would have minded. So apologies if we did wrong - it was all with the best intentions!

Yes, thanks for explaining. Did they pay for this opportunity? If so, I have no objections- given Mumsnet's financial situation - but I think it should be made quite clear on the post that they are advertising their product and have paid for the privelege of so doing, so that those of us who object can ignore it.

Sounds like their marketing department should be procastrinating themselves. Mind you, can't be as fun as working for the Wine Marketing Dept of Tesco's must be at the moment.

Imagine offering a fifth off French wine the same week as Le Pen's party get one fifth of the vote.

I spoke to my friend last night with 2 month old screaming in the background with BAD colic, she's at the end of her tether, tired emotional etc etc etc. So get off the phone, dial in to my favourite website intending to trawl for colic, and here it is all bright and fresh!! I wrote down every possible suggestion and phoned her back immediately. She's tried the C&Gate milk with no joy but hasn't tried any of your other suggestions yet - so she feels much more positive and the thought that she's not alone with the dancing naked and eye of newt if only it would stop, made her feel much better! Thanks again everyone.

I'm still in the middle of it myself, and last week someone told me to feed him fennel tea as an aid to digestion. Hugo's only 5 weeks old, but for the last 3 weeks we've had colic every evening - its been pretty bad for him. The tea does seem to be helping - I guess it might be a bit like the sugar water - just a comfort aid, but I make it up weak and put it in a bottle and let him suck a bit on it if he's having a bad attack. AFter I take the bottle of him - I pop a dummy in hius mouth and he'll suck away happily for 10 minutes or so before we have to go through the whole thing again. I was very anti dummy in the begining, but after this I'd really reccommend one - it does comfort them.
The other trick we use is putting him face down on a warm hot water bottle.

Good luck - can't wait for this to pass!

its a complete nightmare- I remember it well and dd1 is now 4. One thing which seemed to help was reflexology. I don't know why but we took her for a couple of sessions. Otherwise the knowledge that it mihght stop at 12 weeks gave us something to hold on to. Goodluck
