how do I solve my cold toddler waking up in the night?

He won't stay under the covers and wakes up in the early hours freezing cold! (Our house is like a bloody fridge at the moment).

I put him in a vest and thick pajamas as well as a put a duvet under the bedsheet as well as one over him. He's such a wriggle bum that he doesn't stay under it for long tho.

Can you buy all-in ones with feet for toddlers?! or what does everyone else do!

I would try him in a gro bag again now he is old enough to realise he is cold during the night and that he'll be able to walk around in it anyway!

WheresTheAuPair · 20/09/2008 18:33

Its worth a go with the grobag or the grobag duvet idea - would need to be a massive grobag tho! He was fantastic in them until the spring and then that was it.

He's still in a cot at the moment with a cot duvet so the weights thing may be an idea when i take the sides down in a few months. I didn't want to do this until the new baby arrives and things settle down. He's really good at bedtime and loves his cot so its just overcoming this problem until then.

Will talk to Dh about getting an oil radiator as well- in fact may need 2 as the baby's room is freezing aswell at night (well- when he is old enough to go in there).

I picked up a fleecy all in one in sainsburys earlier as a first attempt...wish me luck tonight! DS also has stinky cold so hope it will keep him nice and toastie.

Thanks everyone for your ideas- very helpful!

i agree with cat64. thata what we have done with our wriggly 4yr dd & it works!

Thankyouandgoodnight · 21/09/2008 21:39

We have an oil rad that you set to temperature 'x' and it keeps the room at that temperature, so sometimes it's on and sometimes it's off (i.e. thermostat controlled). You can also set it on a timer so it does it's magic at night time and is just off in the day for example. It either came from Argos or John Lewis!

TheArmadillo · 21/09/2008 21:41

fleecy underblanket might help as well.

You tend to be able to pick them up cheap from supermarkets.

LyraSilvertongue · 21/09/2008 21:49

We had an oil radiator with a built-in thermostat in DS1's bedroom when we lived in a house with no radiator in his room so it was freezing. It worked a treat. I think it was only about £20 from Argos.
Those duvet clips are worth a try though.

Btw, I got DS2 Peppa Pig pyjamas from Mothercare. They're blue and white, with a little bit of pink (unavoidable really) and were in the boys' section. Not sure if they still sell them. Whoever does their merchandising needs to understand that there are lots of male Peppa fans out there.

lou031205 · 21/09/2008 22:09

Let me know

DD1 (2.9) insists on sleeping completely naked, no covers, just a sheet on the mattress, with a fan on!

She is sometimes icy in the middle of the night, but insists she is hot. We have an oil filled radiator on in her room, as well as the fan. Madness!

EachPeachPearMum · 21/09/2008 22:25

Peppa Pig bedding for a boy?

WheresTheAuPair · 21/09/2008 22:30

@ lou031205 DD! thats madness! brr i feel chilly just thinking about that lol. She must be a tough cookie!

thanks for the tips lyrasilvertongue i'll have a look for Peppa pig stuff in the week. Their marketing team could double their output if they did more unisex stuff. all the bags/duvets etc are always pink- very poor marketing decision there!

Last night he slept through tho not sure if it was because he is exhausted with a rotten cold. I put the fleecy all in one on (to some protests) but he was cosy when i checked him at 11pm so didn't wake up in the early hours either.

The thing is that when we will have the heating on next month- i can see that we will have a problem as it will be too hot for him to have the fleecy thing on at bedtime and then bloody freezing when it goes off at 11 or so!! Might need to look into the oil radiator idea- at least that way i can keep the temp consistent. Have ordered the clips as i like the idea of keeping the duvet on him- trouble is that he's such a wriggler, i'm not sure if he'll stay under the covers!

DD was waking up cold at night so I gave her a full sized duvet rather than the cot one (she is in a toddler bed). The duvet is miles too big for the bed but I have folded it over at the bottom and the extra weight of it hanging down at the sides means it stays over her even when she wriggles

nannyL · 22/09/2008 19:20

not read whole thread but have you seen that grobags now make "my first duvet"?

they zip into it a bit like a sleeping bag so cant actually rollthe cvers off

fizzbuzz · 22/09/2008 20:20

I'll second the duvet clips, they are great.

Dd will not wear a grow bag, or have her feet covered by an all in one (yes she is a pain)
