Toddler nappy leaking overnight - any advice please

DS2 is 2.10 and in Pampers Pull ups size 5 overnight. For the last 4-5 weeks about 2 out of 7 nights his nappy has leaked even though it isn't full. He also sometimes wakes up and needs a wee but if the nappy is too full at the front it seems to stop him from going. Anyone else had anything similar or could recommend a better overnight nappy please.

I use washables, but woud recommend a slinky minky that you fill with pads, that way you can pad as much as possible/needed.

If the leak is alway in the same place, it could be that he's getting an erection during the night, and when it goes down his penis is pointing upwards or sidewards, and so he wees out of the nappy. This was what was happening with my ds1. We never found a satisfactory solution, though. The best we managed was to try different sizes of different makes. Sometimes a tighter-fitting nappy worked better than the 'proper' nappy for his weight. Possibly because he is very slim-waisted.

Another thing that helped was to check his nappy when we went to bed. If it was wet at the front up to the top, then we change3d it, else it would leak by morning. If it wasn't that wet then it didn't generally leak. If his nappy was dry when we went to bed, we would lift him to wee on the loo.

Hi prettycandles - yes this seems to be exactly what is happening. Also I think he sometimes needs to have a wee but it doesn't come out. He is very slim and even the size 5 pampers are a bit big round the waist. I will try some others and see if they are any better. Thanks for the advice

Another thing that I'm sure didn't help was that we often found ds fast asleep with both hands down the front of his nappy! Men!

I only use pull ups during the day as I dont find they cope with ds's pee enough to cope overnight!! Try pampers baby dry in the biggest size for his weight. I am using size 6 at night for ds which start from about 33lbs (ds has just made it to that weight at 23 months). I use size 5+ baby dry for daytime or own make pull up nappies (e.g. Lidl and Morrisons) but I know you dont get the in-between sizes in the easy up pants.

I have found normal nappies more absorbent overnight than pull ups

I use reusable nappies but on the occasion when i use disposables at night i found there were leaks due to my daughters strange sleeping position. The solution to put a reusable nappy wrap over the top of the pampers nappy. A great brand is Motherease rikki wrap (buy online around £7). They can be rinsed and will be dry in the evening to reuse again or can be machine washed and line dry in about 20 minutes. i have never had a leak using these with either a disposable nappy at night or using reusable nappies in the day time provided you put it on carefully. My child is 15 months old and the cost of buying a wrap far outweighs the inconvienience of constantly washing sheets and pjamas.

I use a wrap (when ds will let me!) too on top of a nappy. Even big pants on top help - for us the problem is wiggling.

Go back to pampers babydry

Huggies Superdry seem to do the trick

Pannacotta · 22/09/2008 21:49

Also use a nappy wrap over a nappy (Motherease Rikki wrap).
DS1 is 3.8 and does huge wees at night so this is essential to stop him waking at 5/6 a.m. with wet pjs/bed.

Normal pampers are good. My son has autism and is still in nappies (he is 5) and he uses pampers number 6 and also movicare nappies i think they are (they are SEN nappies but very good too)

lemoned · 06/12/2010 12:49

DS is only 21 months and has already outgrown Pampers size 6 for nighttime absorbancy. We've tried Huggies which seemed better for a couple of nights but have since started leaking. I'm seriously regretting taking him out of terry nappies now (we had poo explosion issues).

I'm going to try the Motherease wrap over his sposie idea.

Anyone else noticed that you can get boosters for cloth nappies but for disposables you're just left to believe your child pees an abnormal amount?

Anyone had any success using cloth boosters in sposie nappies?

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 06/12/2010 12:54

Yes we have put microfibre boosters in a disposable. Last week our springwater supply froze (!) and so we couldn't use the washing machine for a few days. The disposables were frankly rubbish and only way to stop them leaking was with a cloth booster and a ME wrap over the top!
