DH says no to new nappies so it's Prefolds or Disposables

I had shaped nappies for the first 3 months but then the size 1's didn't fit. DH not convinced on real nappies and says as we were given about a million prefolds and wraps we must use those or keep using disposables. Am trying to do newspaper(?) fold with nippas, but they are just not as good IMO. Any tips? Have loads of boosters but still just seems unsatisfactory. DS is now nearly 6 months and tall and slim with yummy chubby legs.

We have 8 wraps
I put the pads with liners into the wraps and they are on the shelf in the nursery ready to go for the day.
I fold the pads once they are washed if I am honest it takes about 5-10 minutes to fold them all but once folded I stand on the pile to squash them together a bit. they are then in the drawer waiting to be put into the wraps.

You should try good old fashioned terry squares. I love them. You can fold them to whatever size you need (the nappy lady or whoever it is has a thing about folds if you need it) and they generally work out around a couple of pounds each, depending on where and which kind you buy (Boots and Mothercare do a six pack for about a tenner). They're brilliantly absorbent, and a great night time nappy, and really easy to use once you've got the hang of them. They also dry really quickly. It's all good.

Seriously? You can do real nappies at night? Or does that mean getting up to change him 4 times...DS is a boobie boy and I'm a pushover. He must drink 40 gallons of milk every night...

My dd feeds a coule of times during the night and we use washables all the time. Add a couple of boosters to the nappy and it should last.

iwantasecondone · 18/09/2008 21:11

Have got 30 wraps in medium and large...suppose I could have less and sell some. Got given most of them, but some are still in plastic with tags.

That should say 20. I'm not THAT bad...

We have barely ever used disposables - we just put extra boosters in at night. DS used to drink his body weight in milk every night but we hardly had a leak.

DeJaVous · 18/09/2008 21:18

You can definitely use real nappies at night. Hemp boosters are wondrous things

MoChan · 18/09/2008 21:19

Yes, just boost them a bit if he's a heavy wetter (with anything, really, I used to use terry face cloths. Hemp's very good for that too. As are microfibre cloths, 3 for 89p or thereabouts, from Tesco). My little one is not as wet overnight now (she was a through-the-night feeder for a very long time, but I've finally managed to get her to sleep from 8-5 at the ripe old age of 13 months) so she doesn't need boosting so much any more.

It probably still will be a pretty wet nappy by morning but baby should be okay if you've lined it properly. What kind of liners do you use? Fleece is best, imo.

thisisyesterday · 18/09/2008 21:25

oh yes, def good at night. the only time ds2 has ever had a leaky nappy at night was when we used a disposable.

cloth is fantastic for night.

if you still have some wraps that are unused you can put them on ebay

iwantasecondone · 19/09/2008 11:48

Sorry for disappearing while you were offering good advice...DS is not a well bunny. We both got about two hours' sleep last night, so will think nappies tomorrow.

Check freecycle for real nappies. But prefolds are good - we use them with a nippa a bit like a terry, as they seem more secure. And yes, we use washables at night too, as our mothers did on us!

wontbepreggersagain · 19/09/2008 13:47

give the prefolds a go with a simple pad fold- twins have to live with prefolds in the house or when i'm in a slummy mummy-can't be arsed to wash the nappies mood.

The key to using prefolds is to use good quality wraps- motherease rikki are the best ime.

then buy a nappy here and a nappy there- your stash will soon build up and you'll have fun choosing a nappy from a selection

or persuade dh that you will use the prefolds at home and invest in lots a few scrummy pockets for out and about.

LazyLinePainterJane · 19/09/2008 13:48

so how does your DH think you will find all these free disposables?

He doesn't object to you spending money on ones that you throw away but he does on reusables?

iwantasecondone · 20/09/2008 08:09

Sorry LO not been well, no energy to MN. It's that he doesn't want to waste money on more nappies that dont fit/wot fit in 5 minutes.

Terry squares are brilliant, I found them easier than the prefolds. Also love the bumble from easypeasy. Try looking at bumfluff it's a lovely nappy site run by a fellow mumsnetter who is very knowledgeable flamesparrow gave me excellent advice when I was using cloth.

mybabywakesupsinging · 23/09/2008 01:26

I have used terries + prefolds for 16 months (folded front end over, fold into thirds then fan out the back so that it goes round the baby - bet that doesn't make sense). Use nappy nippas.
At night: terry square + bamboo prefold + bamboo booster + fleece liner. He has a HUGE backside

easypeasy are selling an eco-bumble, which you could stuff with your prefolds, for £14 for 5. They fit ds2 with room to grow he is now 17 months.

hettie · 24/09/2008 11:16

hemp is great at night- my choice would be ella's house bumhuggers. Seem to remember that there are lots of places to get 2nd hand nappies- try googling..... Also to reassure your dh, ds will not get as big as quickly from now on. We have been in the next szie up since around 6 or 9 months and ds still fits them (at 18 months). He is a skinny minny with long body short muscly legs and I found natures babies to be a good fit (v reasonable too)
