Tots Bots Fluffle..... help?!! Nappy novice....

Hello

I'm hoping someone out there can help me! DD is 13 months old and I've finally gotten round to ditching the disposables in favour of cloth nappies. After much deliberation I went for the Tots Bots Fluffle as I'd heard good things about it, and especially like the fact they are so quick to dry. Although we have a tumble dryer its not so eco friendly to use and tbh its too bloody expensive to run!

Anyway... the Fluffles arrived on Friday, and I duly washed them all and couldn't wait to get DD into them...

But we've had some really bad leaks, both day and night. TBH, I've put her to bed this evening in a disposable as I can't face another morning being woken at some ungodly hour by a very wet unhappy cold lo.

At night, I've been putting her to bed in a fluffle with 2 boosters and a fleece liner but she is waking up early, and even her sleeping bag is soaked through.

Just to top it off she now has terrible nappy rash.

Even during the day with frequent changes she is still soaking and the PUL feels clammy and wet to touch (even on the outside). We've also had leaks from around the legs. I think the problem here is that DD has very slim legs (I'd like to be able to say just like me but unfortunately not true!). I find it hard to get the PUL done up tight around the legs without making it too tight around the waist. Maybe I need to try different wraps?

I'm still suffering with PND and thought doing something that I've been meaning to do for, well, the last 13 months would give me a sense of achievement but so far I am just failing. i feel like flogging the lot on ebay and crying under a duvet but I think DH will go nuts as we are broke and I have bullied him for ages about getting cloth nappies.

Has anyone else had any experience of fluffles and can give me some tips? Surely I must be doing something wrong... All suggestions welcome! Thank you :-)

PS. dd weighs 21lbs and in the size 2 fluffle and PUL.

Gingerbear, thank you, that is v kind. Not sure if medium might be a bit small but would still love to take you up on the offer as its worth a try (will also come in handy if we have another bubba!). How do we do this?!

Thanks to everyone for your posts, I'm off to bed now and feeling much more positive. I love mumsnet

Ecover plus white vinegar in final rinse.
Tried ecoballs, they were fine for clothes, crap for nappies!

I would second the vinegar in the final rinse, it helps get the last of the detergent out and deoderises too.

Let us know how you get on without the extra fleece liner

Thanks everyone. The mother-ease wraps have been shipped today - I must admit to using disposables until they turn up

I'll let you know how we get on. Thanks again for all the advice and tips.

Hey, update time! We've had 24 hrs with the mother-ease and only one little leak!

I've been using the fluffle with the popper insert bit, and a terry booster and changing her every 2 hrs max. Usually the nappy is pretty soaked... I'm sure I could wring it out. Does this qualify as a heavy wetter? lol... I will get the hang of this!

I must adjmit that I have stuck to disposables at night... one step at a time!

One last thing - is normal for bubba to have red marks around her legs from the wrap? If I do it up on the tightest popper we don't get leaks, but we do get red marks. The next fitting seems more comfortable but it is difficult to get a proper seal around the leg. Hmm.... decisions decisions.

Thanks everyone for all your help, you are stars.

Yup, that counts as a heavy wetter! Often heavy wetting is a phase, I hope that's the case with your DD.

The wraps don't need to be so tight they leave marks, you don't need a 'proper seal' around the leg for them to work IME. Adding one more booster (between nappy and wrap if needs be) should provide enough extra absorption to allow you to do the wrap up less tight. Cotton is fine but bamboo would take up more moisture with less bulk.

Microfibre is sponge like, so you would probably always be able to wring the nappy out when it's wet!

PollyPoo · 22/09/2008 21:16

Well I'm not sure if Boo is wetting less or the nappies are becoming more absorbent.. either way the nappies seem to be working. And the mother-ease wraps are fab. Hoorah for cloth nappies!

Think I might get some hemp inserts for night next... I'm a convert

Thanks again DJV for your encyclopedia type knowledge!

I'm really pleased it's working out for you! Cloth is fantastic once you get to grips with it.

Enjoy!
