I mean obviously she can do this because she did but do you know what Im getting at? My ds (age 8) came back today and said that the whole class was kept in for the lunch hour(it wasnt wet play) as they had not done things like underline things etc ie, according to him it wasnt for any valid reason. They dont get a break in the after noon so they would only have had their morning one. We are new to this school so dont know whether to make any fuss or not....I certainly dont want to make things difficult for him in the classroom, but does anyone else think this is not on?

She is insane. Both of my children came home today exhausted after their first full week of school for nearly 2 months, bickering, crying, sobbing, shouting, furious, sad, angry.... oh God I am so glad they have gone to bed. If she wanted the company of simlilarly exhausted children who needed to be out playing, she is an energetic woman.

They do and I would not keep someone in for their whole break, the fact that my students know I will keep them in means I rarely have to enforce this sanction.

twinsetandpearls · 12/09/2008 21:04

I do teach secondary which I suspect is different. But if my dd was not following instructions ( she is 7 next week) I would be happy for the teacher to use any legal sanction. She does behave impeccably ar school, possibly because she knows I would support the teacher 100%.

You never know what actually happened as kids do often get the wrong end of the stick.
However, if she did keep them in all of their break, as a teacher, I can echo that she is nuts. They will just be wild all afternoon. Keep them in for 10 mins maybe.

Don't go rushing to the head. That would be ridiculous.

If it happens again, mention it to the teacher.

AbbeyA · 12/09/2008 21:55

I think that you should always mention it to the teacher concerned before you go to the Head.

LollipopViolet · 12/09/2008 22:21

I used to get kept in at breaks a lot when I was in juniors (usually for not finishing work). It really upset me, part of it was my slow writing (and that's been put down to my poor sight). Personally feel no good came of it. And it was the whole break too (circa 1996/97). Kids need a break. But do try and get the whole story, and see if it happens again before doing anything.

SqueakyPop · 12/09/2008 22:27

I think teachers have a pretty good idea when pupils are doing their best or not. I would never expect a slow writer to necessarily complete the work (although I will often give them some of the written work typed out to stick in their books), but I know when competent kids are slacking, and I will hold them to task.

I do not tolerate reduced effort at all. They are all expected to do their best, whatever that is for them.

Don't complain

Have some faith in the teacher ffs

She (he?) would have had her reasons

No wonder nobody wants to go into the teaching profession any more

People just undermine, undermine, undermine and then wonder why kids grow up with an entitlement attitude

btw, I am not connected with the teaching profession in any way

Lay off

SqueakyPop · 12/09/2008 22:29

But you are an expert, AF, because you have been to school

LollipopViolet · 12/09/2008 22:32

Oh not doubting that at all squeakypop, just saying for me, I didn't think it did much good. The same teacher also did it when a boy's food went missing from his bag, but that I completely understand. Was annoying though, no one owned up and we lost lunch break and almost lost second break too! Again, this was year 1! Teachers do very well though, I doubt I could do their job.
