sick of washable nappies...(vent)

I posted recently about ds's sore legs (using MEOS & rikki wraps), and had many helpful replies, but unfortunately none of the suggestions worked. So with many regrets ds went into disposables for a few days, and his soreness got much better. Meanwhile I invested in a couple of new styles, and tried some out yesterday & today, with a MEOS overnight.
Net result - ds is back to wearing the 'red shorts', his skin is sore & irritated over the whole groin area, plus he has a little bumpy rash from thighs to tum.
Final straw came this evening when I changed Ds after a very big poo (sorry if TMI) & feeling upset and powerless to help him I was trying to get most of it off down the toilet when DS pushed his way past my legs and dropped DD's adored 'doctor's bleeper' down the toilet. Bleeper went up in a shower of sparks, I was trying to conceal the fact from DD, get DS out of the way, whilst holding a disgusting squelchy poo-covered bundle. I have had enough of it now and feel like giving up and just using disposables.

My grumpiness may also be connected to the fact that today is my 40th birthday - a fine age to be, but you might think, something of a landmark - and my gift from DM & DF was... £20 worth of tesco vouchers. Yeah, thanks, I'll get some baked beans to make myself feel better. We don't give expensive presents in my family, so the value is not the issue, but I just feel that it was a bit lacking in thought & care from my own parents.
sorry, I know this is totally irrelevant to nappies.

Hovely and Allycat did you ever resolve your problem? my ds has jsut started having very same symptoms which are classic allergic reactions. The only thing that I can think is that either the rubber is deteriating in the wraps because his is allergic to latex or that perhaps the washing machine was filled to full and the wraps didn't rinse. But he is much better with newer wraps (use motherease)its the older wraps that are giving him problems.

He has been naked for a day and we use neal's yard baby barrier which we have found is the only thing that works to sooth skin. Problem now is that because he is 2.5 years old he puts hands down nappy to scratch him self which makes things worse.

So would welcome your suggestions.

Hi Hovely happy unbirthday to you,
I know I know, someone already said wool wraps, but if you are trying wool wraps and you can knit, or know someone who can there are a load of free patterns on the Web (they are called wool soakers in US).
If not there is a free pattern for a 'baby bum sweater' on the Web as well, this is actually made from an old jersey, so no knitting required. Obviously, you have to enlist someone to babysit whilst making these things, or look pathetically at your inlaws and point to the picture.
I hope you enjoyed your Tesco beans - you can get a lot for £20 can't you.

Thanks for all further suggestions. Allycat - how are things with you?
I have not really gone back to washables full time, now drifting along using moltex disps with about 1 - 2 washables a day depending on what we are doing. Still there is a bit of redness every single time. I'm using stuffables with a fleece inner plus a fleece liner, and using Boots zinc/castor oil cream as a barrier - but they do leak. Tried the Lovebums site - nice wraps but give an enormous bum, so there are tight trouser issues! (same with Minkies). Oh well, it's a compromise that I can live with. Unfortunately I am allergic to wool so don't want to invest lots in wool wraps in case Ds has the same allergy.
PS thank you all for the kind birthday wishes! In the end it dawned on me that i could use vouchers for normal shopping and blow £20 elsewhere, so I splashed out on a couple of vases at Woolworths (plus chocolate).
