Finally started my long awaited Teacher Training course, and have just found out I'm pregnant. I want to carry on, is this possible. Please help!

That's it really. I am thrilled about the pregnancy as I am subfertile, so it was very surprising. I have given up my job to move to a new area where I can get to a university. I have moved my eldest to a new school. We have moved to a new house.

It's all those free pregnancy test kits' fault (the ones being given out by Clearblue on Mumsnet). I never would have known! I would now be blissfully unaware!

The course finishes next June and I reckon I could be due anywhere between March and May.

This must have happened before (she says hopefully)... there must be guidelines in place... there must be a way for me to continue... surely.

Don't tell me I can't. I've given up so much already, I can't put it off again.

Oops.

Congratulations!!
I'm am in a smiliar situation. I'm 8 weeks pregnant and due to start my final year (of primary education) on 29th Sept.
Have decided not to tell university until my 12 week scan which will hopefully be before the start of term....I'm due in April though and the year doesn't offically finish until May so I'm wondering whether they will let me hand in assignments early or let me defer the final term until next year...
Am worried about teaching prac though as I think it finishes when I'm 29 weeks .
Lots of luck to you.

Thanks Narky, good luck to you too

I have always said, if something is worth doing in a ridiculously over-complicated and unnecessarily difficult manner, then it's worth doing

I totally agree .
Now that you've forced your way in they won't be able to turn you away....It will be hard work for both of us but we'll get through!! I am soooo scared!
Are you doing primary or secondary ed?

youknownothingofthecrunch · 01/09/2008 20:05

Secondary - teaching English. At least it took all my nervousness about my first day away

I just hope I have a really easy pregnancy (hope you do too ).

I have never managed to do anything the easy way. Some people seem to walk through life and everything falls into place around them . Ah well, it builds character I suppose.

My DP is head of English so shout if you need anything.
I haven't managed to do anything the easy way either...just noticed your Welsh - I am too...maybe that's the reason .

Moomin · 01/09/2008 22:00

English is my subject too: been teaching for 15 years this year (ahem - I was a child genius of course, I'm not really 40...)

...and like I said I'm mentoring all the PGCE students this year, so feel free to ask for any help with anything.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 02/09/2008 20:24

Thanks Moomin and Narky - I may well do

Thank you all for your help yesterday, it really helped me keep going. I had such a good day in University today. I just hope I don't get too swamped by it all.

How is your week going?

allgonebellyup · 05/09/2008 14:21

only just seen this thread - congratulations!!!

i remember chatting to you about doing the secondary English PGCE, and you being a bit nervous about starting - and now you are pg!
Good work!

youknownothingofthecrunch · 06/09/2008 14:59

Thanks It has definitely all gone belly up!

I've had a really good week. Haven't told anyone yet - I'm going to wait until after the scan before I do anything.

I have moments where it all seems eminently achievable, and then others where I feel an idiot for even trying it. Although when I am in University I am only ever positive, so that should probably tell me something.

I just wish I didn't feel so nauseous and tired all the time the joys of motherhood.

I have made a conscious decision to stay as positive as I can: Even if I have to restart the whole thing from scratch 5 years down the line, this is still invaluable experience. I start my first school placement in 3 weeks and it's in the school I was hoping I would get; I'm really looking forward to getting into a school. Fingers crossed it all goes as smoothly as it can.

I found out I was pregnant the week I started uni as well lol. They have plans for things like this, you can delay the finish of your course if needs be and just start where you left of at the uni near here so Im sure thats the case elsewhere too, they will also give you lots of support if you can carry on, I had a couple of weeks off and then went back but took it VERY easy

Congratulations!

Youknownothing - How are things with you?

marjean · 26/10/2008 20:18

I was six months pregnant when I started my TP1 last September. I finished along with everyone else for the Christmas holidays and my dd was born first week of Jan, so I was essentially teaching at eight months. It was hard work but it was fine.

However, have just begun TP2 and have found out I'm pregnant again! Should be able to squeeze in enough days but will I ever finish this bloomin' course?!

sunshineakindat · 07/11/2008 11:28

hi. i did my pgce at the institute of education i had a 1 year old then found out i was pregnant with twins! they were due in the january and i did the course up until christmas holidays. i deferred for a year but made sure i did my dissertation in that time which was a welcome relief from nappy changing. i went back the following year and apparently i was the first person to do so. my tutor was brilliant, really helpful and he made sure my placements where near me. dont let your pregnancy put you off. you will feel great once youve qualified and get 12 weeks paid holiday to spend with your children! good luck
