What is your view on taking photos of your baby in the bath?

Hi, I was just wondering as I have lots of photos of DS (10 months) in the bath, some alone and some with me or his daddy. I got some photos developed this week and DH had a major strop as there was one with DS in the bath with him. Perfectly innocent and a very cute photo (and obviously no boy or man bits could be seen) but he said there's no way I should have sent it off for developing as people in the past have been done for this! Apparantly some woman got hauled in by the police and lost her job and everything because she had taken photos of her kids in the bath. Not sure if he's made that up or wildly exaggerated it just to make me think about it though? I told him how utterly ridiculous he was being and how it's a sad day if we can't treasure photos like this.

What do you all think???

I see nothing wrong in taking pictures of your kids in the bath.
I have heard stories along the same lines as your DH but took them with a pinch of salt to be honest.

I have heard that people have been done for photos like this. I was going to google children in bath photos to see if I could find an article about this, but didn't know what sort of site I would find.
I have photos of my kids naked, some were taken when DS1 was a baby (he is nearly 11 now) and were developed in a shop, the others were taken with a digital camera so all on my laptop.

I think he is being utterly ridiculous and there is nothing at all wrong with taking pictures of your own baby in the bath.

Suspect the case he mentioned is (a) not in the UK, or (b) involved a much older child, or (c) involved some other factor.

I agree with you it is sad however I wouldn't like to take the risk so I wouldn't send them off to develop them but would take them to the self-developing machine's at Boots or even do them at home on the PC.

There was a case (ages ago) where a female newsreader was hauled in for having naked pics of her young daughter in the bath sent away for development.

There was later a MASSIVE climbdown by the police/everyone involved, who admitted it had been a bonkers overreaction. I don't think it would happen again - at least, I hope not.

The unfortunate lady in question was Julia Somerville, if you want to google the case.

Why wouldn't your dh bath with your dds RR? I'm not saying he should it just seems a bit sad if it's because he feels he shouldn't.

We have photos of dh in the bath with the dcs, not sure I would send them off for developing but I wouldn't really get stressed about it now it's done.

Have googled and child in that case was seven (I did dimly remember it when you mentioned her name).

I still think photos of a seven-year-old in the bath are probably fine, but even if someone has a different opinion it's ludicrous to extend that to a ten-month-old.

I can relate to the space thing - I try to sneak off quietly to have a bath or ds3 will inevitably peel his clothes off a jump in with me!

I've got baby photos like this. ds's in the bath, or naked on a towel, kicking their legs in the air.

They are lovely, innocent, beautiful pics of babyhood and nothing to worry about.

I have loads of photos like this. My baby's dimply bum is the most gorgeous thing and it needs to be captured on film

I have never had them printed but that's because I'm a lazy arse and haven't had prints done of any of my photos. I certainly wouldn't worry about having the police called.

Poor Julia Somerville - I do remember that now actually. Ridiculous and very sad

Tangentially, yesterday we went to the Wetland Centre and there were lots of small children playing in the eXplore playground area (which has a sort of water shower feature in it). Some were in swimming costumes, some in underwear and some completely naked. And there were lots of parents trying to figure out photograph their own DCs without looking as though they were taking pictures of other people's naked DCs (me included... I waited until a point where there were only DS and one other girl who was in a swimming costume under the showers and then took some quick snaps.

Anyway, it was all very lovely and a good traditional summer's day activity, and no one got lynched or arrested...

Nothing remotely wrong with pictures of naked children, in the bath or anywhere else, with or without other people there.

The police and courts can tell the difference between these pictures and abusive ones - when people get into trouble for having "indecent pictures of children" on their PCs, they are not talking about the kind of pictures which could have an innocent explanation.

It's not at all that I am worried about the police coming to our door, it was just because DH reacted the way he did! I think he remembered that case well and was just thinking that some crazy photo developer would think it was 'wrong' or something.

And poor poor Julia Sommerville, what is the world coming to?

Years ago, befor the world went mad, we took a photo of a 1 year old little girl lying on her tummy naked. It is such a cute picture because she is resting her chin on her hand as if to say " oh lord it's David Bailey again"

I put it in her life story book and when her social worker saw it I was "instructed" to remove it forthwith as it would be deemed pornographic.

A little bit of me died that day

We are told now that it is wrong to take photos of naked children or of them in the tub and we are also told not to bathe with them or co-sleep.

It is indeed a sad world

DH loves bathing with DD and often sits her on his lap so they can look at those waterproof books. Never thought anything of it and he would be mortified if he thought anyone else did. She's 7mo btw. I have a brilliant picture of her in her first bath and she's genitals akimbo! She was only about 6 days old though and I don't display it anywhere. Must take some more before she gets too old

OMG Flower3554! That is awful that your SW told you to take that photo out the lifebook! These attitudes are tainting such innocent things

I also have loads of photos of DS breastfeeding as it has been such a wonderful thing to be able to do, I wonder what people would say about that?! (mind you I haven't had any printed, bar one a day after the birth).

I agree ILYS, I realise that there are perverted people out there and children need our protection. and I would never agree to publish or put on t'internet any photo's of our lo's but cute pictures for their own amusement in later years seems so innocent.

We took DD (14mo) to the beach to weekends ago and let her run around in the nuddy and took lots of pics. She looked so cute and liberated it would be a shame not to be able to do that sort of thing any more.

I have pictures of DD naked. She is a baby FFS! I have pictures of me/dd in the bath and of dd/dh in the bath, and her in the bath with her cousins.

Unfortunately, due to the twisted environment/media hype and suspicions of people around us (including me, fearing what kind of person might be developing them) I would not ever use a highstreet shop for developing those pictures, would do them myself.

I also do not put pictures of DD on the net for all to see (occassionally I will put a piccie of her, not naked on MN, then change it from public to private almost instantly once those I want to see it, see it).
