How do we get DS to stop making a noise that he doesn't even know he is making??!!

He is 7 and for a few years now has been making this funny noise in his mouth when he is concentrating on something - playstation/nintendo/writing etc. It is very annoying (esp to DH) but we just can't get him to stop. He really doesn't know he is doing it. We say "no noises please" and he says "ok" and then does it again in seconds.

I mentioned it to his year 1 teacher and she said to leave it and he would stop but it is still going on.

Any suggestions please?

Phew, Buda - no advice but nice to know ds isn't the only one! He does it too and he swears he isn't doing it when I ask him to stop! He does it when he's watching something really intersesting like about planets and science that he loves and he's really concentrating and enjoying it.

Well I am glad too admylin but you are no help really are you ?

Sorry no I'm not am I! However, my ds is now 10 and still does it now and then so that might give you an idea of how long your ds might need 'til he grows out of it!

If its any help - I used to do this - if I was really concentrating I would hum - would drive everyone nuts - I stopped naturally by junior school but people would constantly ask me to stop so that might have had something to do with it!! Guess I'm saying gently remind but don't worry!

Oh God admylin! 10! DH will have driven me nuts by then let alone DS if it doesn't stop!

DH seems to think we need to see a doctor!

scrappy - glad to hear that you stopped. It is so hard as he really doesn't have any idea he is doing it. He is sat behind me at the minute playing playstation and making 'the' noise. Totally oblivious.

Mine is three and she's been doing "the noise" ever since she could concentrate on anything. I find it cute and wouldn't want her to change, but certain remarks from other toddler and even grown ups are making me hesitate. Don't want her to be mocked or insulted just because she does this noise.
Any similar experiences? Would you tell her to stop just to protect her from those out there who can't stand something different?
