Do any of you have a "Family Mission Statement"? And if so, what is it?

Am reading a book where it suggests such a thing. Am thinking it sounds mad and more suitable for business, but does anyone have one in the RW and if so, how does it work and what effect does it have on your family?

I've got two.

'Sit down, shut up and blody listen'

'The adults earn the money so they are in charge.'

See I know it's a bit cringey and all but it does work. One of our BHAG's (big hairy audacious goals!) is to take a year out together and travel, just basically to spend a year together as a family. So if we are going to make that a reality there are lots of things to look at like finances, housing, visa requirements, schooling etc. So writing it all down makes it achieveable because it breaks it down into manageable chunks. I just think otherwise it's too easy just to drift along and you never get anywhere.

My old boss had Fit In or Fuck Off (FIFO) as one of his tenets too

DS has a mission statement:

'To live in a family with more than one child'

Unfortunately this conflicts with dh and my goals for the tattered remains of our lives. How bad would it be to organise a private adoption?

Saturn74 · 22/08/2008 18:44

If the children are arguing, we employ the SUMO rule (shut up, move on).

There is also 'touch Mum's chocolate and she'll break your legs'.

And 'please don't use the pets in any experiments or inventions'.

We just muddle through the rest.

LittleBella · 22/08/2008 20:41

But Mrs M, I would call waht you're talking about targets or at best objectives.

Still haven't found anyone with a bona fide mission statement. I wonder why?

I know a family who have this

We are a family that seeks to follow Christ in all He has called us to do - whatever or wherever that may be.

Heading their family blog. sounds like a misson statement to me.

They are working to become missionaries:-)

lljkk · 22/08/2008 20:54

Tonight's mission statement:

"Don't let the pet rats eat houseplants and chew the buttons off the remote control."

Or the wild rats, for that matter.

EffiePerine · 22/08/2008 21:02

lololol at the whiteboard and the bemused rabbit-chewer

we had family meetings too (generlly when things were unravelling) and they were hideous. No way am I inflicting anything like that on my kids - I think I'll go for the totalitarian regime instead. As long as someone else tells DS...

LittleBella · 22/08/2008 21:03

None of these mission statements are up to much, apart from the religious ones. For the others, I sense a certain levity of tone

Maybe it's a christian/ religious thing? The book I'm reading had a lot of "doing God's will" stuff in most of the examples.

we decided to go round travelling for a year one April when we sold our house and got it organised and set off round the world with two kids that August. No mission statements. Mind you we did come back with three kids so maybe a mission statement would have helped.

LittleBella · 22/08/2008 21:04

Family mission: to take dictionary with the word contraception in each language...

Belated congratulations!

Dear god, I think business and CEO's should be more like Mums not the other way round.

LoveMyGirls · 22/08/2008 21:44

Hatty - i think it's lovely your dad was so involved, I'm guessing your mum was in the greenhouse reading a book while your dad toko over

OrmIrian · 22/08/2008 21:44

'Just keep breathing, it'll be bedtime eventually'

struwellpeter · 22/08/2008 22:00

'When you reach the end of your tether hang on!'

woodstock3 · 23/08/2008 18:22

i think our mission statement is probably to be the kind of family that doesnt have a mission statement....
but i do know a girl who has made herself a wallchart about her goals, a la sticker chart for toddlers (but with less emphasis on potty training and table manners obviously). when she does stuff towards her goals she seriously rewards herself with a gold star and when she has enough stars she rewards herself with a treat eg massage.
i am NOT making this up. she, undoubtedly, has a mission statement. (tho currently not a family).

Madlentileater · 23/08/2008 18:29

We have some mottos.
The parents united shall never be defeated (you have to chant it...I guess that dates us)
No difficulty in the world can daunt a communist (title of a chinese song)- usually used for mad schemes as I broke my arm very badly shortly after saying this...declaring the dry stone wall not too high to climb...
We used to have mealtime rules written out, which were headed- Goal: A pleasant meal time for everyone.
But a mission statement, that's going Too Far.

Cappuccino · 23/08/2008 18:31

I do like the bedtime one Orm

we don't have a written mission statement

but certainly dh and I always manage to make sure there is beer chilling by 6pm

one or the other of us always manages to do it, so it demonstrates fantastic teamwork, working towards a common goal that is so central to our existence but has never been articulated

hattyyellow · 23/08/2008 18:53

I do like the idea of a wallchart for mums! Sometimes my DD's are all stickered out for the day and I'm thinking "what about me? Surely I should have 10 million gold stars for counting to 10 at food being thrown on the floor, preparing meals etc". Might make one with the girls stickers tonight!

We'd love to do a year around the world too. We did a year overseas a couple of years ago but the girls were babies so even my dad might have struggled to get them to list their objectives for a successful trip!

Bumperlicious · 23/08/2008 18:58

'Walk tall and tread softly...
...for fear of treading on a piece of toast or a sharp toy!'

Hijack though - the round the world trip, how did that work?! Would love to do it, though can't imagine ever being able to afford it. How much money did you have before you went? Did you leave your jobs? How old were the children?

LittleBella · 23/08/2008 22:01

Have read more of the book and looked properly at the note on the author and have realised that the reason he has come up with htis idea is because he is a bloody management guru! I am flabergasted!

ghosty · 24/08/2008 07:20

LOL LittleBella - as soon as I read the title of this thread I thought "Steven Covey"
I have his first book, "Seven Habits for Highly Effective People" ... I read it if I can't sleep - it soon sends me off ... I haven't passed chapter 4 yet and I have had it for 3 years
ROFL that he has written one for families too ...

Our Mission Statement (if we had one) would be: To get through the day without a) seeing blood and b) seeking solace in Alcohol before 7pm.
