Haircuts

I gave DS his first haircut yesterday, but refused to cut the curls round the back. DH isn't totally happy with this and says I've given DS a mullet (I have not!).

Do other people get professionals to cut their children's hair? How about first haircuts? I realise that not everyone has this to worry about with a ten month old baby as not all of them have such long hair, but DS's was beginning to bother him by going in his eyes!

I really need to get ds a haircut he's 13 months. My brothers girlfriend is a hairdresser so she'll do it not sure what I would do if I didn't have her.

I'm not a hairdresser by a long way, but I figured it couldn't be hard to trim the long bits off. That sounds like the beginning of a tale that went very badly wrong, doesn't it?!! LOL!

we cut the long bits down up until he was about 17mths but then it just got out of control.

we took ds to a hairdressers but he wouldn't have any of it. eventually dw had to request that he play with the running water in the hairwashing sink. he loves this and he didn't even bat an eyelid while she cut the rest of his hair. we tipped generously.

No, we just shave all his hair off (actually, not all, we leave a few curls, etc).

Sooo glad I don't get the profs in - it's bad enough having to shell out for my own hairdresser let alone one for DS.

Only downside is that I have to shave Ds' and DH's hair

Just to reiterate - Ds is mixed race so he has lovely curly hair even when short and does not look like some thug or Nazi skinhead when it is cut short .

Good idea from DaddyCool ds 19 months looks like a surfer dude. Everyone thinks it is so cool, but it is getting out of hand.

Had to start DD's haircuts very early and always take her to the hairdresser (was free when she was little).

I realise I'm the odd one out here, so can someone please explain to me why they get so sentimental about getting their kids' haircut? I always find it really odd when you see toddlers with a mullet-type mop that hangs over their eyes and the mum goes on about not being "ready" to cut it and how cute it looks?

I'm with you, marialuisa. Can't stand it when Ds' hair looks like a messy afro, however curly and cute. Looks much neater and 'in place' when cut!

I can't believe my luck on this one. About 3 years ago dp decided to go to a proper hairdressers rather than popping into a barbers when he felt like it. So he started going to my hairdressers. We now have a fantastic arrangement in which dp & ds go together on a Saturday morning and have theirs done while I go along during my holidays on weekdays for blissful peace & quiet!

Dp & Ds seem to just love it (ds is just turned 2) and talk about their hairdresser regularly. I think they get a big fuss made of them! Ds sits on Dps lap and they all chat together. We also discovered fairly early on that if we just popped in when ds was in a good mood to get his hair cut, they charged us £8! But if he has it done at the same time as us, they don't charge!

I took ds today to get his cut. It is his second cut. It was to my own hairdressers this time. He was in hysterics. The hairdresser who is the owner at one stage called one of the other girls over to hold his head in both her hands. I thought this was going a bit too far so I told them to leave it and I brought him home and cut it myself while he was sleeping. It actually looks ok

My kids love getting their hair cut. I take my 2 year old to a children's haircutters where they have special seats that are shaped like cars, and they get to watch a video while their hair is being cut, and then get a lollipop and a balloon afterwards.

My 5 year old used to go to the same place, but she has very thick hard to manage hair, that she insists on having short, and without a really good haircut it is either a total mess or she looks like a boy, so she now goes to the same lady who cuts mine. She loves the fact that she goes to a grown up salon, and it is expensive but her hair looks great.

My ds is desperate for a haircut and I'm not sentimental but I just cannot face the trauma of taking him. Suggestions welcome he's 15m and will not stand/sit still for 2 minutes

I can't remember how old ds1 was when we started doing this but the hairdresser gave him the water spray-bottle to play with. He showed him how it worked and told him to "make it rain" and let him spray as much water as he liked onto the mirror - and Mummy! DS loved it so much he didn't even notice he was having his hair cut!

My dd was 2 before she needed a hair cut. However, ds is 15 months and has a curly mullet effect at back due to my lovely homemade fringe. Can't see him sitting still for hairdresser so not sure what to do with it. He has to have 3 nails cut at a time as he won't sit still for nail cutting either.

Marialuisa, I got sentimental about it because DS looked SO cute with a standing-up quiff on the top of his head (honestly, he did!). He looks so different now - it's like another baby!

Janeybops, we have the same problem with DS's nails...I suddenly find I must've missed one for three or four nail-trimmings in a row and it's really long - usually find it when he digs it into my boob when he's feeding!

I cut dd's hair last night while she was asleep!

I propped a cushion behind her head and chopped away!

She now has a proper fringe and lots of neat curls at the back!

NBG, bet she looks gorgeous! DS is fairer than I knew - he had blond roots! LOL!

I do it myself - both boys and dh. I have a pair of electric clippers and I'm not bad, though I say so myself. They all have exactly the same hair-cut though (no 2 at the back and side, graduating upwards to a number 3, then a number 6 on the top. Then trim round ears and fringe with scissors).

I still have to shell out £35 at the hairdressers for mine though.

It does look good I have to say and she's getting blonder everyday!

Dh suggested I cut more off, I went barmy!

I've got a little box for the first curl and I don't want to chop any of them off!
