Nail varnish. What do you think about it on children?

Is it okay to put it on small, preschool children? Assuming they have asked for it and is part of some well-thought out holiday play scheme/considered parenting approach to behavioural issue.

Or is it unsafe and cheap and frankly a wee bit suspect to paint the toe nails of a four year old?

Or is it just fun occasionally and ffs just polish after all?

I painted my eldest's toenails for years, as he wouldn't let me cut them without the promise of shiny polish. He became terrified and hysterical, but it has to be done because his toenails 'claw'

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/08/2008 01:13

no different to face paint imo.

makeup on children is only bad when it is part of a child in a beauty contest kind of thing.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/08/2008 01:14

and it's sad we have to ask.

One Dad I know went berserk when a friend painted his 4 yr old DD's nails. Same friend painted my 2 yr old DS's nails and neither DH nor I had any problem with it. DS was VERY proud of them
Agree it's sad we have to ask.

alipiggie · 12/08/2008 02:23

Well my DS was very proud of his bright red toe nails and he's 5. What ever happened to fun .

S1ur · 12/08/2008 09:18

Clearly my slight tongue in cheek over seriousness didn't translate well in my OP.

lol at 'sad to ask' stuff, given that we ask about all sorts of mundanity in our lives

I have follow up question which was actually going to be point of OP originally.

SInce my children's toenails are now rainbow coloured... How do I get the stuff off? Obv I could use acetone but it's not great stuff to use on anyone let alone smaller people. A small amount and well washed off should be fine though. Or I could just let them keep it until it chips off/grows out/etc.

Hmm, what do fellow polishers do?

I find most of it usually disolves off in the swimming pool.

Twinkie1 · 12/08/2008 09:22

DD (8) loves having nails painted - I let her have nice colours when she is with me and gross multicoloured nails when she is going to XHs - we take it off with nail polish remover or a pneumatic drill!

Don't see it as that much of an issue - all her friends have their nails painted and it isn;t as vile as seeing a little girl with her face covered in make up - but that is just my opinion.

maidamess · 12/08/2008 09:23

broccoli ,where do you go swimming? My nail varnish has never dissolved in a pool before!!

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 12/08/2008 09:26

my dh hates dd1 wearing make up unless its for her dancing. im a bit meh about it. its washes off and no harm is done.

though my sister has her looking like a mini me when she does her make up and considering that she seems to base her style on amy whinehouse thats an awfull lot of make up. dd enjoys it though and feels very grown up and proud so im still a bit meh about it.

nail varnish is fine provided that dd1 asks as opposed to going searching for it herself thereby painting her whole hands and the carpet in the process.

bozza · 12/08/2008 09:27

I think toe nails are OK but am less keen on finger nails because it looks chipped and messy straight away. I do find mine comes off in the pool (not all but some yesterday during DD's half hour lesson for which I have to go in the pool) but I do use nail varnish remover on DD too.

littlelamb · 12/08/2008 09:28

DD is 4 and I will paint her toenails if she asks me, but not her finger nails.

Indeed Lapin, my thgouhts exactly. Dd asked as part of circus show we did yesterday.

Toesnails of many colours. Fine.

But removing? hmm. I think I might just wait and see if it starts to wear off on it's own.

Mine wear it on their toes. They like it. I see it as a tradeoff as am very anti small girls in makeup and they, of course, are fascinated by the repulsive stuff.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 12/08/2008 09:39

My ds (4) loves his painted toes and fingers (blue), but I never remove it just let it wear off, if you buy cheap polish it comes off an active child in a matter of days!

nervousal · 12/08/2008 09:43

DD loves to have her nails painted - and so waht if it looks messy and chipped within 2 hours of having it on??? Shes 4 - she's not meant to have perfect nails.

DD has started asking if she can put "scara" on - she sees it just like face paint. She also goes to the shops regularly in her cinderella dress.

I do not like it all, think it looks cheap and tacky on children. Why do they need it, same as make up imo.

Jackstini · 12/08/2008 10:19

dd (2.4) loves it - 'to be like mummy'
Has been asking for ages but I only very recently let her have some on.
Use acetone free remover to take it off but I mostly use paler colours and it wears off anyway

ChippyMinton · 12/08/2008 10:21

pale pink & sparkly & a useful bribe for DD (4)

Jackstini · 12/08/2008 10:21

What about these? (for 7-11s ish)
www.fingrs.com/littlefingrs/girlie-nails/
Just put on for parties/sleepovers and they come off in the bath with warm water, no chemicals required.

Acinonyx · 12/08/2008 10:23

If I wear it dd asks for it and I paint her toenails (started before she was 3). I hardly ever get around to it though so it's not often. Children tend to develop the same habits as thier parents. I don't wear make-up but i like to paint my toe nails. Quite good activity for her while sitting on potty.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 12/08/2008 10:23

It's not just a girl thing, my uberboy is fascinated by my makeup.

hercules1 · 12/08/2008 10:25

Used to think it was awful however now I have a four year old dd changed my mind. She loves having it on and it is really for fun nothing else.
