If you have an Alternative lifestyle, how important is to expose DC to Pop culture?

We aren't that alternative, but still outside the mainstream. I have friends who raise their DC even more outside the mainstream... some (like us) make an active effort to keep their DC in touch with how other British people usually live, but some don't, they zealously shield their DC from perceived wrong/undesirable mainstream values/habits. I wonder if they're making a mistake, to shield their DC so much.

If you have an alternative lifestyle, do you worry about making sure your DC are still in touch with aspects of popular culture/lifestyleyou dislike, or do you think it's better to shelter them as much as possible for as long as possible?

nailpolish · 07/08/2008 16:20

why dont you ever eat out? we do it frequently

its not evil to go to a restaurant

Overmydeadbody · 07/08/2008 16:20

lol

PortBlacksandResident · 07/08/2008 16:20

So does that mean if your children go to McDonalds and you like to go to Cromer for 2 weeks and sit on a beach and if they eat stuff from Iceland and you've taken them to see the Tweenies in concert rather than a festival and allow them to watch back to back Cbeebies that you are actually quite 'alternative' on MN?

Overmydeadbody · 07/08/2008 16:21

no naily, not evil, just blurdy expensive

nailpolish · 07/08/2008 16:21

it doesnt have to be you know

filthymindedvixen · 07/08/2008 16:21

not dressing them in mini-boden means they are like, well, alternative, doesn't it?

Port, that's like, wayyyy alternative! Are there people like that? Can I stare?

Overmydeadbody · 07/08/2008 16:23

naily I expect riven's reasons for not eating out ar a bit more complex though than just expense.

DS and I eat out, we have picnics on park benches, sometimes for breakfast before school if I've run out or cereal or milk for breakfast, is that alternative-like?

OMDB - i've heard them spoken of in certain circles but seen absolutely no evidence myself that anyone eats in McDonalds - especially those with children.

And it's a well known fact that no one watches Cbeebies, ever.
