Temperature of 105 - dangerous?

Hello. Some of you may have seen my other thread, but I will start from the beguinning anyway.

Thursday...DD miserable, put it down to teething at first. Noticed she was a bit warm when I put her to bed, but not hot so just opened window and left her in her nappy. 10.30pm ish, she wakes for a feed, Boiling hot (104) so I gave calpol and she had a bottle (90% breastfed, has the odd bottle to settle her). So after the bottle is all gone, she shoots the entire feed accross the room. We brought her downstairs, did various things to bring down temp while we phoned NHS direct, who were no help at all. She screamed and scream till eventually at about 2am we took her to A+E as her temp still hadnt gone down and she was obviously in pain.

Hospital said she had a tonsillitis, and had white pussy spots on the throat etc gave her paracetamol and nerofen and sent her home. In and out within 20mins (But typically she acted fine in hospital and the cold car journey temperarily bought her temp down a bit).

Friday - still cried all day, still very hot etc so took to Docs at 6pm. Doctor said that if the hospital discharged her, she is probably fine and no need for antibiotics and also said there were no spots - which is the opposite to what hospital said.

Today - still cried most of the day. Late afternoon wasn't too bad, had a nice long bath with me and went to sleep well (hadnt slept much the last few days). Just been up to her about 20mins ago and she was boiling again. Took temp and its 105, which is the highest its ever been. But I know its generally higher when sleeping anyway, but surely not this high? Have given 4mls calpol and a breastfeed and is back in cot asleep.

Should I be worried her temperature is soo high? I am sure I read before on here that anything above 105 was dangerous?

Hmm, if she's playing I would give the nurofen some time to work.

Is she nursing/getting fluids?

tutu100 · 26/07/2008 22:16

Take her. My Gp told me that any temp over 39c in a baby under a year should be seen by a doctor. She has had a consistently high temp for several days now and thats even with calpol/nurofen.

You are not being an over anxious mum, you are being a sensible one. I'm sure all will be fine but it will not hurt the doctors to look at her again.

Good Luck let us know how you get on.

Have just rung DH who finished at work at 11.

We have said that we will see how she is buy 10.45, if she is still hot, then I will pick him up from work (just a 2min drive) and we will go to the hopital.

I am dressed and ready to go, just in case.

There are drunk people outside

She has been breastfeeding in small feeds, but some has been vomitted back up. Not interested in solids or water or juice etc.

Do you think it is ok to leave her half an hour to see? Or should I go without DH? My phone is low batter and I cant find the charger, He has no way of getting to the hospital on his own

chloemegjess · 26/07/2008 22:23

she is not very happy now. breastfeeding atm, but was crying not playing. a bit dazed, but then she is usually in bed!

I would just go to the hospital after picking up your DH even if her temperature is down you need to establish why it's been so high and rule out needing antibiotics.

HongKongFoeey · 26/07/2008 22:25

go-take her to the hgospital NOW.
seriously i would never take a chance with a wee one.

much better to go and be sent away than not to go and something to happen.

lisad123 · 26/07/2008 22:26

we had a simular thing the other week, temp that wouldnt go, screaming in pain, rash, sick ect. My LO had measles.
You know her best, does she appear ill? Is she very sleeply? hard to wake? floppy? unable to settle?
If she seems ok in herslef, she properly is fine. If your worried get her checked.
HTH

mum2oandh · 26/07/2008 22:26

If she is still playing, and looks ok in herself, then I think you are ok to wait 1/2 an hour.

My doctor insists that 'well children look well and sick children look sick'

Sometimes children run a very high temp with a mild cold and a much lower one with a potentially serious illness. Temp alone is not an indicator of how poorley a child is.

chloemegjess · 26/07/2008 22:28

she is sweat, clingy, upset, dazed, sleepy and hot. but as i said, she is usually in bed by 7ish

OP posts:
HongKongFoeey · 26/07/2008 22:28

which is fine for children a bit older but for a 7 month old baby a temp that high is dangerous in itself.

Niecie · 26/07/2008 22:31

Can you not call the out of hours doc and see them instead?

Ours is in a separate part of the hospital to the drunks in A & E and it is like a GP appointment - in a room away from the hoardes not in a curtained cubicle.

HongKongFoeey · 26/07/2008 22:31

just pulled this off the net;

If your child is under one year and has fever over 38.3 degrees C (101 degrees F) which you are unable to bring down, call the doctor.

tigana · 26/07/2008 22:32

have you packed a bag in case they keep you in to monitor her? Don't mean that in a scarey must-be-something-serious way, just in a prepared way!

CarGirl · 26/07/2008 22:34

if you take her to the hosp and she needs antibiotics they will give them to her straight away otherwise you then have to go from the dr to somewhere to get the drugs!

HumphreySmallPillow · 26/07/2008 22:35

You describe her as "a bit dazed".
Take her to A&E.
That is an extremely high temperature - especially for a tiny child.

chloemegjess · 26/07/2008 22:35

ok, wil pack a few bits now

OP posts:
mum2oandh · 26/07/2008 22:36

I think you need to go to hospital, has she had a feed since you brought her downstairs?

chloemegjess · 26/07/2008 22:38

what do i need to take

OP posts:
lisad123 · 26/07/2008 22:39

change of clothes for her, nappies, toys, drinks, money, and stuff for you to freshen up if needed.

HongKongFoeey · 26/07/2008 22:40

a toothbrush, flannel and soap for you. changing kit for dd. clean knickers and a clean t-shirt.
and then GO

chloemegjess · 26/07/2008 22:41

yes, she has had a short bf

OP posts:
tigana · 26/07/2008 22:41

Nappies, wipes, toothbrush etc for you and change of clothes . Pack as if for an overnight stay anywhere. Plus IME I would pack drinks (and nibbles)for yourself.

This is all 'just in case' ok? Ds's trip sto hospital A&E/MIU/out of hours have all been for asthma...
