Ways to make DH hate cloth less?

Been using reusables for six months (wambamboos, ME wraps, wonderoos). I like them and am happy to wash them etc, but DH really doesn't.

Had discussion about them this morning, and DH pointed out that:

  1. The nappy bucket in DS's room (drypail) smells and he is revolted and also concerned about the hygiene
  2. DS has nappy rash a lot - every time he poos, which is several times a day even though he's one on Sunday
  3. Having said we would 'try them out' I am now completely fanatical about them.

I have to admit that

  1. Yes, it does, but only for a minute or so on opening
  2. He does quite a bit, but goes quick and doesn't seem to bother him much
  3. I am fanatical because DH has been so negative that I feel permanently on the defensive.

He admitted in turn that I had a point and said he's willing to try harder if bucket can be less gross and rash less prevalent.

So, o Mumsnet cloth gurus, any words of wisdom to make my home more harmonious?

I use this nappy soak and it doesn't smell at all - in fact i keep the buckrt in the kitchen close to the machine and i haver never smelled it.

Sorry 4give me for being ignorant, but why do you dry pail and not soak? I'm on my second baby using terry squares (the ones you fold yourself - yes ladies, the ones we had when we were babies!) and i have always used a nappy soak with mine. Why do you not soak them is there a reason as to why you shouldn't?

Some people like to soak, some don't, some do both depending how they are feeling. It's not essential. It's just a preference thing.

Oh and for some of the nappies that have elastication or similar the nappy soak solutions will reduce the life of the elastication.
Sometimes I soaked in just water.

Bambino Mio are in a lidded bucket in the bathroom with 10Lt water to 100ml napisan liquid to soak, put in after rinsing both wee and poop nappies first, poop ones need a 48hr soak - wee ones don't really need to soak at all, but have wicker laundry hamper - and are sparkling after a regular wash using bio powder, as all nappies rinsed before bucket entry - no smell

MatNanPlus · 26/07/2008 19:07

Also i put a little air hole in the lid as any odours can gently disperse and don't whack you as you open - am in a hot climate

Hannah81 · 26/07/2008 19:15

oh right! was just wondering. well the nappy soak i use deodorises them so you dont get a smell at all. maybe you could use something like that to stop any smells? my dh does do changes, but i do the washing.

I hand-rinsed mine before putting in the bucket and didn't seem to have a problem with smells whether dry or wet-pailing.

frazzled, nappy rash might be more likely with wonderoos in this weather or is it permanent? I notice ds2's getting redder if he wears anything synthetic so I've been using the wbb's & sandies more - you could see if there's a pattern. I use camomile nappy cream with everything, seems to sort ds2 out pretty quickly and not a problem with pockets.

dp has complaints about the nappy bucket too, I just ignore him as he never puts a wash on! But you could have 2 buckets, pooey nappies in bathroom & wet ones in bedroom as you don't need to rinse those. They will start smelling worse as ds gets older or perhaps that's just my dc's!
