I have 6 weeks to improve my chemistry knowledge by 12%. Do you think I'll do it?

I'm going to apply to train as a doctor. I've had enough of being a student nurse and teaching the medical students. I know alot and I will be so good.

Wish me luck, I really want this. Thans in advance. I might not apply but I will read and be so very grateful.

Yes, you name them going down the chain, not alphabetically.

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 00:46

link to IUPAC nomenclature here

Scroll down to alkanes

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 00:46

I have one book that says to ignore the prefix and another that doesn't say this. I think I have too many books! It's confusing. Just as bad as having too many parenting books that all say different things.

thankyou for your help.

Avenalife I asked dp and he agreed it is confusing because there are a lot of very specific rules about how you name. But his first response was 'name left to right'

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 00:52

In alphabetical order if they're on the same C atom in the parent chain?

eg. 2-bromo-2-ethyl pentane

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 00:52

Thankyou . I know about the rest of the naming, the books can't decide on the multiple branches though.

The web site's fab Ramble. Thankyou.

Anyone know anything about the eye and what happens to the fluid if you go under water?

OP posts:
RambleOn · 25/07/2008 00:54

Name from the earliest substituted atom.

Wow, anyone clicking on your thread now must be nodding off, sorry.

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 00:56

Ramble. If you have a parent octane chain with 2 methyl on c3 and 1 ethyl on c5 would you get 3,3-dimethyl,5 ethyloctane?

OP posts:
AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 00:57

lol! Sorry. I will think of a better thread for next time. My hampster pongs maybe?

Dr Avenalife??? Sounds good! Good Luck

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 01:04

Thanks.

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 01:06

Yes, that seems right to me.

Have googled eye thing, as I'm intrigued.

This is the best I could come up with

all about fishies

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 01:13

So the fluid is regulated through a canal in the eye. I got this one wrong last time then.

I'm off to bed. Six weeks to go! Thankyou for all your help. I'll look at the nomelature in the morning if I can get ds away from the laptop.

OP posts:
RambleOn · 25/07/2008 01:40

No no no!!

I'm wrong. It is 5-ethyl-3,3-dimethyloctane.

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 01:43

your actual compound here on page 100

Jeez, hope you come back to this thread in the am and I haven't put you on a bum steer

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 19:55

Bumping in the hope that AvenaLife sees her thread

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 20:02

I've seen it. Thanks. I'll go through the link when ds goes to bed because he likes to talk!

Why does it go 5-ethyl-3,3-dimethyloctane? d goes before e in the alphabet so they can't go in alphabetical order??? 5's also after 3 so do they not go in numerical order don the parent branch either (IYSWIM).

Go for it and best of luck.

KatieDD · 25/07/2008 20:13

Oh my husband is applying for this at Liverpool 2009, he has a 2.2 in Chemistry I just hope that will be enough.

AvenaLife · 25/07/2008 20:22

The exam's a nightmare. It takes all day and is split into 3 sections. Chemistry's not my most favourite subject. I get it now but failed my A level at 18. (I'm alot older now) I should start in October 2009. Fingers (and toes, legs, arms, feet...) crossed.

Good luck to your husband KatieDD .

RambleOn · 25/07/2008 20:45

As the substituted gps on the third atom are the same, ie two methyl groups, the di bit can be ignored.

Therefore they are in alphabetical order, ethyl, methyl.

I can see how you're confused - I thought I understood and remembered all of this. I'm now confused too

Ginni · 30/07/2008 20:51

Hi AvenaLife, I find what you are doing so inspiring and wanted to wish you the best of luck! I'm looking forward to all your updates on your progress :-)
