Lemonade at six year old's party?

Yes or no?

DD1 would love to have lemonade at her birthday party this week. She regards it as a huge treat.

I reckon some of her friends have probably been drinking fizzy drinks on special occasions for a while. But a few most definitely haven't. Of the latter, some only drink water anyway - but we have one younger sibling coming who I'm pretty confident has never had a fizzy drink and will most certainly love it!

So do I go for it? Or put my health-conscious foot down in the interests of harmony with my mummy friends? Your votes please, mumsnet food police.

Yes! It's her birthday! But have water available

WideWebWitch · 22/07/2008 13:11

I'mn in thge food police part time and I say yay, it's a party, she wants it. You can always check with parents if they're stayting and are going to be worried about it. But I expect they'll drop and run so won't be around to make a decision. Your party, your choice, go for it.

TillyScoutsmum · 22/07/2008 13:12

Yes - Its a party

go for it. i love lemonade. if you put truckloads of ice in it then it'll at least be a bit dilute.

iBundle · 22/07/2008 13:12

go for it!
i bought pricey, pink lemonade the other day.

dd2 still won't drink it though!

I vote for including it in a small selection of drinks as it is specially requested by your dd and it is her birthday. And have milk too for extra brownie points.

belgo · 22/07/2008 13:13

Lemonade is fine, you can always get an organic one.

Anything with caffiene or e numbers I wouldn't like at a child's birthday party, but I wouldn't complain either.

Gateau · 22/07/2008 13:13

Oh for FFS, just let the child have a treat.
Poor lambs - a water-only diet. How boring! Now how would we like that?

TheFallenMadonna · 22/07/2008 13:13

Oh I would. Have other options available. Offer a choice. No worries.

NormaSnorks · 22/07/2008 13:13

Personally I wouldn't. I've tried to avoid my DC getting a taste for fizzy drinks for as long as possible, on the basis that what they don't know, they can't nag me about.

They are now 8 & 6, and only very occasionally get a lemondae when we're out somewhere.

DS1 usually spouts something about it rotting his teeth

Why not give her some later at home if you want her to have some as a treat?

The other mums will thank you for NOT introducing their children to it...

Snaf · 22/07/2008 13:14

Well, it's a party. so no big deal, imo. Plus, there's lemonade and lemonade - it's probably possible to get some that isn't nightmarish aspartame-y shite.

You could always make your own with organic lemons if you want to please the naysayers

NomDePlume · 22/07/2008 13:14

FGS, it's lemonade at a party not cyanide and mass suicide pacts.

The food nazis have a LOT to answer for.

Lemonade is fine IMO. And delicious, esp when mixed with LAGER .

Go on be a rebel.

Why not add Iron Bru, Coke and that blue energy stuff to the options too.

Seriously, if she wants it and it's treat then have it.

Smithagain · 22/07/2008 13:15

The trouble is, it appears to be the little lambs themselves that prefer water. Can't get my head round it myself. Its the easily-corrupted ones I'm more concerned about.

Liking the way the vote is going so far, though.

If you do, you will have to deal with the sugar rush and associated behaviour

DS1 goes mad when he has a fizzy drink, which may also be colouring my judgement here....

TheFallenMadonna · 22/07/2008 13:16

Well, water is a pretty easy alternative, so that's OK.

WideWebWitch · 22/07/2008 13:17

Offer them water too. organic lemonade although it might be missing the point from your dd's pov if she wants a sugar hit

Doodle2U · 22/07/2008 13:17

Red Bull is also fun to have at childrens parties.

Smithagain · 22/07/2008 13:17

Ah - all the negative votes came in while I was typing that.

And I've got aspartame-laden R Whites in the cupboard too Didn't think to check - just thought it was a good one so wouldn't have sweeteners.

Bugger - personally I'm happy with fizz for special occasions, but less keen on sweetener.

you don't need to give then pints of the stuff and have juice and water as alternatives.

Guadalupe · 22/07/2008 13:17

well, it's not coke is it? It's just sugar and water and gas. There will be other sugar at the party I assume, in some form?
