reusable nappies - how do you keep them soft without tumbledrying?

I have used a selection of different nappies, but if I don't tumbledry them occasionally they get quite stiff and starchy feeling.

Is there something I have missed that should keep them soft????

just scrunch them up in your hands after washing and line drying and rub the fibres together, they will soften up no end.

Tumble dry for 10-15 minutes rather than fully tumble drying them. Give them a very good shake after washing. Some people suggest a little white vinegar in the fabric softener dispense.

A Calgon type tablet in the wash helps.

I tend to finish them off in the dryer (just a few minutes) though.

adding sodium bicarb or washing soda will help soften the water. Detergents have this included in their ingredients but if you are using a half dose you can boost the sodium content of your wash (sodium reduces the hardness of your water) by adding either of these and it won't adversely affect your nappies.
