I am all lost with this potty training malarky...help?

I have tried reading up on it and am a bit lost.

I think DD is ready. Well I know she is. We had the potty around for ages, she has gone from putting her bears to bed in it, to for the first time two days ago actually going for a wee in the potty. She did a little, was very pleased and showed me by tipping it up 'loooooook!' luckily not much!

A few minutes later while cleaning her teeth, she asked for the potty quite desperately, then went in it!!! Lots!

Not been at all interested since, then today, she got it and took it around with her for about 20 mins, sitting on it, and occasionally saying 'sore, sore' which she does when she does a poo sometimes. Then she stood over it and did a poo, right in it!!! But no wee. And now she does not want her nappy on at all

It seems I should now set a day when she stops using nappies? Does it have to be this rigid? We are used to being quite fluid with her development, just going with the 'flow' so to speak.

So what should we do now, get some knickers? What about poo? Do we potty train for this too at the same time?

LOL, I am like that now. A poor young girl at work asked me how DD was, it took all my will power not to tell her how proud I was that DD used the potty and how I wont have to clean the floor from wee anymore!

well done on the potty training.

we got one of those travel potties. i got fed up carrying my potty/seat insert when i went to visit friends. was much smaller, comes with a handy bag big enough to fit in a spare pair of bottoms.

nailpolish · 10/07/2008 21:23

i didnt bother taking anything out with me - ever

i just held them over the toilet. crouch down in front of them and they can put their little arms around your neck (any excuse for a cuddle from small chubby arms!)

Thing is, she usually just stands there, and goes! How do I stop that at, for example the beach, and encourage her to actually think about going for a wee, as in, crouch, wee, wipe? Usually she just runs around and when she goes, she goes!

ds wouldn't go for first couple months on the big toilet without anything

. scared incase he fell in i think. he's fine now.

been dry through the day for 6 months just. will climb up by himself and hang his butt inside. suprised his bum doesn't touch the water.

Pavlovthecat · 10/07/2008 21:33

LOL, it must be funny seeing your DS terrified of falling in! DD is not really interested in the toilet itself apart from to flush while I am on it, and to clean with the toilet brush when I am not looking !

he used to just scream and refuse and run and get the potty.

shouting "no likey , no likey"

Pavlovthecat · 10/07/2008 21:57

elmoandella aw bless him!

My two were trained in the summer. Bare bums all the time at home seems to help them "feel the need" more than if pants on.

We have only an upstairs loo, so we did use a potty, but they grew out of it pretty quickly. We had a step and toilet seat in the bathroom always in place and ready to use if they happened to be upstairs.

For trips out the potty came with us (in a waitrose carrier bag labelled POTTY BAG just in case DH found a stray carrier bag lying around and decided to take it off with him to the shops).

Having the potty with us was invaluable for the first few months. Less panicking trying to find a loo when out and about, therefore less accidents, therefore more confident child. On a particularly memorable occasion DS needed a poo when we were on high street doing local shopping. I put potty down on pavement outside somerfield, made a little privacy tent round him with my coat, all went well. Then had to put full to brim potty in the back of our zafira and drive home VERY carefully. But if I hadn't had the potty with me he'd have had an accident in his pants and might have lost confidence ...

eekamoose thats where travel potty comes in handy. you would just tie up the bag and throw in the nearest bin.

eekamoose · 10/07/2008 22:21

I was too mean to buy a travel potty . Our home potty travelled with us {grin] .

elmoandella · 10/07/2008 22:23

ha ha. i had to take ds on hols to see his gp's. and we go swimming once a week.
i have enough to cart around to swimming. gotta take ds and all his gear, plus dd , her gear and a float for her to go in while ds gets his lesson.

he used to use the potty as a wee seat too after his lesson while i got changed

Pavlovthecat · 10/07/2008 22:28

oh god, travel potties...really? Cant I just drag her around in a wet skirt/knickers? She would get the message not to wee herself again pretty quickly (joke)

Seriously though, i remember my mother taking me to this spot on the highstreet called 'piddle alley' as all the mothers took their LOs down it, round a little discreet corner to have a wee!

Cant I just do that? Take spare clothes instead of a potty? Its a mindfield! And it came on all of a sudden too, one minute not interested at all, then suddenly, my dd is weeing and pooing in a baby loo!

i can see next weeks thread

"AIBU to shout a woman for letting her daughter wee up an alley"

Pavlovthecat · 10/07/2008 22:35

LOL...it was, on reflection a very bad mistake on my mother's part. problem was, I had a weak bladder, so she did not really have a choice but...

I have a 'safe pee' radar. I have no shame if I need to go the toilet, I can find somewhere discreet in the teeniest places, subtle, gone and then back before you know it. I would much much much prefer some stranger to catch a glimpse of my lilly-white that walk around in wet trousers for all to see. And I dont think I have ever been spotted. I also have no problem using pubs/restuarant loos if I have to.

Luckily for DH and DD, for some strange reason my weak bladder much improved on falling pg .

...Its all my mothers fault!

ha ha. i'm ridiculously bad also.

i'm only 24 and i can't go a whole night without getting up at least twice for a wee

daffodill6 · 10/07/2008 22:59

Summers a great time to try - easy drying -
IME - loads of praise and lots of patience and laughs

Need a plan for emergencies thou' - are you a 'drain dangler' or a 'travel potty' type?!

elmoandella · 10/07/2008 23:02

lol daffodill.

Pavlovthecat · 10/07/2008 23:04

I think I am erring on the 'drain dangler' label right this second...
