Out of nappies for 6 weeks - advice please!

OK, so DS is 2.11. We took him out of nappies about 6 weeks ago (apart from a night nappy) and I'm really not sure whether we're getting anywhere. He can 'hold on' for ages between having a wee, and has up to about 5 consecutive days with no accidents at all, but he has only ever said that he needs the potty/loo a very few times, so it's always us asking him or telling him that he needs to go. He's often reluctant to 'try' - he doesn't want to leave his train/puzzles/whatever - and we do let him 'read' on the potty! He goes to nursery 2.5 days a week, and I think they struggle to remember to take him regularly because he won't ask to go. Apparently today he had a huge soggy accident when they were eating their tea, and didn't even tell anyone. If we ask him he says he doesn't like having wet pants, and he wants to wear pants rather than nappies, but we feel that the situation hasn't changed in 6 weeks.
Sorry to waffle on, but it's getting us down. Any advice, please?

we hvent had a wee accident for 3 weeks now .... but there is plenty of time to go backwards yet.

He also doesnt go often

typically a wee 9am, 1pm ish and 4pm and thats it.... but ive learnt that now and dont even ask him unless its near these times!

We are desperately keen not to put him back into nappies, NannyL. It's just so odd that he never asks to go to the loo! Plus although we've had spells of up to 5 days without any accidents at all, we seem now to have settled into a pattern of a 'good' couple of days followed by a few 'dodgy' days. Nursery have also commented that he's not being very independent about managing himself around toileting, but then I think perhaps they're forgetting that he is only 2??? (He moved up into the 3+ room because in lots of ways he's quite grown up, and I think that they genuinely forget that he's so young - he's very very tall).
Sorry, wittering again.
Thanks for your response, anyway! Good luck with your charge.

Bump?!? - Anyone else's DC just never ask to 'go', even though they clearly have control???
