So when do babies "become" toddlers? because my 11 month old is tantrumming and jovially destroying my house

Ok so the tantrums are fairly short lived and he is easily distracted, but he just doesn't seem like that much a baby any more, particularly as he's sitting with the remote control pointed at the TV trying to turn over balamory (not that I blame him)

When did your baby "turn into" a toddler?

DS certainly hit the terrible twos at 11 months (actually, the twos were significantly less terrible than the ones )

hmm, well at least that gives me hope! Anyone else?

haha my master now 28 months had his first tanty at 5 months and kept going from there. Now hes a master at melt downs

theSuburbanDryad · 08/07/2008 11:06

Yep - ds also started his first tantrums at about 11 months (perhaps a bit older, i can't remember)

Now at 18 months he is going into full on meltdowns at bizarre things (see my other thread) - apparently it's a sign of a very intelligent child.

DD has just turned 1, and definitely knows how to throw proper strops already, and makes is very clear when she is displeased with something

DS (now 3) definitely started proper tantrums around 16 months, but they were over by 2, so I feel the terrible twos for us were actually at 1.... But he is more of a sulker anyhow than a tantrummer (not sure which is worse).

It's hard when they are so little as disciplining doesn't work too well.... Distraction works better! But once behavioural cause and effect is linked (which does happen very young) you can consider Time Out etc... Not at 11 months though I think!!

Good luck with your independent soul!

DS started tantrumming around 18 months....he still does from time to time but I recognise what starts him off and try to head it off before it happens iyswim?

He is just over two now and I'm stunned that I'm now having success with the 1 2 3 method - he won't lay down for his nappy change and so I'll say if you don't lie down mummy will turn cbeebies off after the count of 3...I count to 3, he doesn't lie down, tv goes off, he lies down, cue much praise and tv going back on. He seems to look for praise now and I can see he is genuinely pleased when I say oh well done ...but I wouldn't have been able to do this 6 months ago...I think it comes from them being able to understand and reason a bit more. Being lavish with praise does help loads though imo - good for their confidence too

Can I grasp some of those straws too, Dryad?

The tantrums have come on since he started to understand the word No, as in "No, it's not nice to scratch mummy's face" (I'm such a killjoy, eh?)

Funnily enough he doesn't tantrum when I shout "NO!!" and run over because he's doing something really dangerous. Maybe it's my tone of voice.

My DD had her first tantrum at the weekend and she turned 8 months yesterday! Not sure if this is any consolation! She was not happy when daddy was teaching how to share toys.

I also find distraction works pretty well at other times, although I'm sure it will get worse. I've always thought babies turned toddlers once they were walking and mobile but now think it's a lot earlier.

woodstock3 · 08/07/2008 21:54

started about 1 year/13 months, usually when denied something he wants or asked to refrain from destroying something. he literally lies down on the floor and howls. it's the rage of being thwarted, i think. doesn't last very long...i suspect it will get worse!
