Chicken pox- can i take him out?

DS1 is 2yrs, and has got chicken pox. He's apparently contagious for a week, so obviously i can't take him to playgroup or the CMs, but would it do anyone any harm if i take him for a little walk if he's upto it? He's going to be climbing the walls shortly...

no he will be fine fresh air is good for sickness and ill health - if he has the spots i didnt think it was contagious anymore just that scabs need to be healed before going back to school.

DD (4) her spots came out friday morning. I took her for a little walk yesterday for the same reason. As long as it's not into town where their are lots of people don't think it's a problem.

You are contagious until one day after the last spot has scabbed over, so although it's dull dull dull, I dont think you should take him out until then.

omg!!! our doc told me ds was fine it was 12 years ago - too late now but clearly im misinformed

Lol. I think that's the case anyway.

Seona1973 · 08/07/2008 09:08

once the spots have crusted over you are not contagious any more - normally 5-7 days after they first start to appear. You could take your lo out if you arent going to be in contact with anyone i.e. a walk would be fine but dont go visiting anybody

LittleMyDancing · 08/07/2008 09:10

You do have to be a bit careful though - apparently it's so easily airborne that you can catch it from someone in the next aisle in the supermarket.....!

And if you happen to meet a pregnant woman who is not immune, that could have grave consequences.

So yes to walks on your own, but not shops or cafes etc, is my thought. Although in fact our DS didn't want to leave the house at all and cried buckets when we tried to get him to take a little walk.

TattooedGrrrl · 08/07/2008 09:30

i was thinking a stroll round the block, so no shops or visiting. Perhaps i'll ring a bell and shout 'unclean!' to warn passers-by.

I do find people tend to give you a wide berth anyway when you go out with a post chicken pox but still spotty child, so you should be OK.

PortAndLemon · 08/07/2008 10:28

You could take him out, but do need to keep him well away from other people -- chicken pox can easily be fatal to someone who's immunosuppressed. Do you have a blasted heath anywhere nearby?

(I am so not looking forward to when DS eventually gets it. The very thought of keeping him cooped up for upwards of a week fills me with gibbering terror)
