Potty Training not going too well ,... worth carrying on or not?

DS pooed in his shoes today after yesterday's spectacular never ending wee on his carpet and most of his toys

yesterday, no wees on the toilet - in spite of willy clutching and grimacing

keeps saying "need poo mummy" which he uses for wees as well

he LOVES washing his hands and whole drying his hands ritual

nursery think we should carry on, i think not

he is 2.1 BTW

give it a few days see if he improves. use a chart with stickers for each success.. but also put a cross in the box for each miss so you can see how often he is missing and keep track. its easy to think it isnt working but you will be surpised how it can slowly improve and u wouldnt otherwise notice. if it stays the same over a few days with no improvement then give in!

I think you should give it at least 4 days!

RubySlippers · 07/07/2008 19:23

we have been going for a week

the problem is if you stop it can send mixed and confusing signals to him. potty training can take weeks to master, and even then he may have accidents.
try the sticker chart, it might be a good incentive for him to use the potty if he thinks he will get a sticker.

he's not too young (although he might not be ready). Ds (2.2) is now dry and hardly ever has an accident, we started potty training 4 weeks ago.

we used a sticker chart. drew stars on teh chart and every time he did a wee or a poo in teh potty he got a star sticker on the point of the star on the chart, then when all the points were full he got a treat, like some chocolate buttons or a small toy.

also put him on the potty every 20 minutes whether he needed to go or not, just in case.

good luck

so, perhaps we should stick with it

he can clearly hold his wee in, judging by the one he did when he got in the bath after protesting that he didn't need to go

is 2.1 old enough to bribe incentivise?

bribes (i'm not ashamed to call them that) worked a treat with ds. still using them now to get him to poo on a potty or the toilet. he tells us now when he needs a wee, only have to prompt him if he's really engrossed in something and is hopping around grabbing his winky.

It depends - i would think that after a week if he's not at least beginning to get the hang of it it might be worth stopping for 6 weeks then trying again. I tried with DD1 when she was 23 months - disaster, stopped after about 4 days as she wasn't even getting the occasional wee in the potty. I tried again a couple of months later and she was dry in 3 days and poos sorted within 10 days. I'm a BIG fan of the chocolate button school of potty training - one chocolate button for successful wees and two (or even a whole damn packet!) for poos. Once they get the hang of it stop offering the chocolate and only give it if they remember to ask, DD1 soon forgot about it so the chocolate button stage lasted about 3 weeks.
