Hi, can anyone help me. My 5 month old DD has really lovely blue eyes, myself i have brown eyes and DF has green eyes.

I am forever getting people coming up to me and saying 'where ever does she get those blue eyes from'. Has anyone else had this or can advise me if they will change or if they should change!!??!?!

Thank you

My mum has blue eyes, my dad has green eyes, and my sister has blue eyes!!

Branster · 01/02/2005 23:57

very interesting info on here!
my mum has brown eyes (both her parents too), my dad has hazel eyes (so does his mum)and I have green eyes. i always thought it was strange. how did that happen?

Mimsie · 02/02/2005 00:05

here is a link to a site that explains about eye colour.

Tamum is right, eye colour is way too complex for mendelian genetics to make complete sense of it. Many genes are responsible for it (at least 3) and although it is less likely that blue eyed parents give birth to a brown eyed child, it is not unfeasable.

The mendelian inheritance is a great tool, but only really valid for simple things like blood groups. (my dad accused my mum of cheating because I was O, while he and my mum are both A)

If you thing about it there are a myriad of shades of eye colour, from the v. light blues, to grey to a mixture, my best friend has bright green in the middle going into brown on the outskirt, I myself have what I consider brown eyes, like the rest of my family, yet if you pay a close attention mine have many shades of green unlike my brothers who are v. dark brown.

Genetics like most life science are a working project we are far from knowing the ins and out of it!! as far as I know we are still unsure as to why women tolerate the growth of a child in their tummies, theoratically our bodies should (and sometimes do) attack it. My biochem book from my studies is already well out of date (and honest it wasnt all that long ago hum hum)

Re: blood groups. I'm AB and my dad was (I think) O and my mother is B (I think). Either way, neither of them AB. Is O made up of everything hence universal donor bit so I've got a bit of A from him and B from my mum - or is that too simple?

Mimsie · 02/02/2005 00:20

errr no your dad has to be an A (or AB) if your mum is a B...

The way it go for blood group is simple. You have a pair of chromosome. A and B are dominant O is recessive

A blood type are either: AA or AO
B blood type are either: BB or BO
O blood type can only be: OO
AB blood type can only be: AB like it says on the tin

Sooo if your dad is O... he could only give you a O... meaning you could either be O or your mum's blood type

joash · 02/02/2005 00:22

Don't know whether they'll change or not at 5 mth.

Things like this tend to run in families.

DD1's dad (little more than a sperm donor ) had brown eyes, as do I. His hair was (or perhaps still is) dark brown and curly - mine is an auburny type colour (naturally). Yet, DD1 has beautiful bright blue eyes and gorgeous blonde hair - the sort I'd kill for.

Every family group (brothers kids/cousins/ aunts/ grandparents, etc, etc) going back three generations has one child in each family with blonde hair and blue eyes - so it's obviously some sort of throwback in our case.

Tinker · 02/02/2005 00:23

He must have been an A then! He was definitely my dad
