Should we carry on?

OK, DD is 23 months and nursery told us on MOnday that they really thought she was ready to potty train. We had boght her some pants last weekend and told her that later she would be a big girl and wear them, but didn't think it would be for another month or so. She went to nursery on Monday and wouldn't pee in the nappy, only in the potty; also did a poo in the potty. So, onthe advice of friends (save yourself the money, don't use training nappies as they can't feel when they are wet etc)we went cold turkey and sent her in with lots of pants and changes of clothes. All week she has refused to poo on potty (quite common I know), and had a variety of accidents (also to be expected). Today I have had at home all day, and she stood in front of me 4 times at home (directly after being asked if she wanted the potty) and HOSED everywhere. She then says WEE WEE and runs around getting it everywhere. Is this worth it....is this what to expect? Our thoughts were that nursery see a lot more kids than us, hence taking their advise. To complicate matters, I am taking her up to Scotland for a week next weekend, travelling round lots of friends, some of whom are toddler friendly, some of whom are childless and will not want this!!

Advice mn gurus please.

ok this situation is exactly what we had. My nursery told us they thought our dd then 24 months was ready as she was showing real interest. So I did what you have done and went cold turkey and stayed in for 5 days focusing. She simply was not ready bladder wise. So she had some grasp on what to do but could not control it herself.

It caused so much stress as you know so I just stopped at that stage and told nursery to allow her to show an interst if she wanted to but no to actively encourage.

When she was 28 months one day she just would not keep her nappy on concerned that it was wet and didn't like the feeling. I tried again then and she was 90% dry in 2 weeks and 100% dry in 4 weeks in the day.

I recommend you just leave it for now and that will save you and dd lots of stress. She will let you know when she is ready and you really don't have to worry about it. Because if you do it when they are ready it's so much easier.

Hope this helps

Too young - not ready - go back to nappies. Wait six months and try again. Or wait til she says "mummy I don;t want to wear nappies any more please"

Shoegazer · 04/07/2008 19:48

I would wait, I tried to train my DD at the same age and while she knew what she should do and where she should do it she could not physically achieve it. Maybe some children are mentally ready before they are physically ready?

I'd wait too. When they're really ready potty training can be done in under a week. Let her be a baby a while loneger. 23 months is very early to train.

I'm going to write a book "Potty Training in 10 minutes" Trouble is, it would only consist of 2 sentences "Wait until your child say "Mummy, I don't want to wear nappies any more". Then say "OK darling, here are some pants and there is the loo"

needaholiday · 05/07/2008 23:48

seeker- that would probably be the shortest baby book on the planet, and the best selling

If you want to keep at it you could also switch to cloth training pants (with no "stay-dry" inner layer) for a transitional phase. That way it would be easy for her to use the potty if she wanted, but no big deal if there's an accident. Bright Bots are supposed to be good. www.brightbots.com.au/category/1/page/1/item/546

Thanks for all the advice. Quick update.

Yesterday, after the advice here on Friday, and a quick chat to dh, we decided to put her in pull-ups because se was obviously getting stressed by the 'big girl pants', (as was I ...which wasn't helping). She did lots of wees and one poo on the potty, was delighted to get stickers, but the pressure was off because the accidents were being 'caught'. Today, lots of wees in the potty, although shes still not sure about poos, so that was in the pull-up. She seems a lot happier....I think we'll take it at her pace and see what happens.

Thanks all...and I'll have a look at the cloth ones. Much more green. She used to be reusables, but the nursery she went to as a baby wouldn't take babies in them, so we switched to disposables. We've moved since and are at a new nursery, so it may be a different story.
