Really stupid question about washing nappies in Vinegar

OK, I am possibly being really stupid here, but when I tried to buy white vinegar in Sainsbo's, my choices were malt vinegar (but clear not brown) or some fancy white wine vinegar. I bought the clear malt and have been washing my nappies in it since . I use eco balls too, not just the vinegar of course. Is this the right product? DS's nappies still stink of piss though

I use malt: does a good job of keeping stains in order and slowing down the accumulation of pong. The only thing I've found that really sorts out a serious build up of piss smell is an occasional boil wash, with detergent. Sorry.

yes that clear maly vinegar is what you are supposed to use

its about 50p a bottle

According to my '1001 Uses of Vinegar' book (don't ask...it was a gift OK!) you need to use a fair bit.

1/2 a pint to 2 gallons in the nappy bucket (if you soak) or add 1/2 a pint to the rinse cycle of your wash.

You can buy white (malt) vinegar in bulk from decent health food shops - much cheaper than the supermarket

Ypu can often buy bigger quantities of white wine vinegar cheaper in health food shops.

I dry pail and add it to the wash. Could you pour directly into the wash if the bit to put the softener in isn't big enough do you reckon?

Don't see why not - I haven;t tried it myself yet.

White wine vinegar is differnt - the white vinegar you want is the type you have. It is used for pickling and cleaning etc but too harsh for most culinary uses.
