Just wondering as ds y1 still fits in his but some of it is a little scruffy i.e pen on his jumpers , bobbling etc.

I replaced the whole lot after reception and it cost nearly £100.

Am now thinking should i just replace essentials like shoes etc. or am i being tight not replacing it all ?

What do you do ?

Just replace what needs replacing.

My daughter will be wearing plenty of things from last winter. But I did buy lots of new stuff in the January sales (we have a dress code, not uniform).

unknownrebelbang · 01/07/2008 16:18

No, only what needs replacing.

I'll be off to the charity shop next month to see what I can pick up. Got jumpers for £1, school charges £8.

I just replace what needs replacing. Eldest Manky is small for his age a lot of his stuff seems to last a while. I will have to get new trousers and plain polo shirts this year though, he seems to think trousers are for sliding in, and white polo shirts are for wiping paintbrushes and pens on.

Get some Napisan Manky - proper AUSTRALIAN Napisan

Its expensive here but a little goes a looooong way.

pointydog · 01/07/2008 17:42

I replace what needs replacing. That's the sensible thing to do

itati · 01/07/2008 17:44

They get new socks every year and everything else as and when it is needed, be that during the year or in September.

This year DS1 and DD need quite a lot of new things.

itati · 01/07/2008 17:45

BTW I have some good condition school uniform that was been grown out of, not worn out, if anyone wants a bargain. M&S so washes and dries well.

LIZS · 01/07/2008 17:47

Only when worn out or outgrown.

mankyscotslass · 01/07/2008 17:49

Mortloth, will give it a go, thanks! Where will I find it over here though?

cory · 01/07/2008 17:49

Certainly not, they wear them as long as they can, and then dd's are handed down to ds (except for skirts evidently). And some of them came from the charity shop in the first place, or were cast-offs from other families.

Dd pointed out to me that some of her knickers are actually for 3-4-year-olds. Dd is a very tall 11-year-old with fine feminine curves. I hang my head in shame (and marvel at the stretching capacity of elastic).

Am pleased to see that dd's new secondary school has the same colour blouse and trousers, so all we'll have to buy is the sweatshirt.

Amphibimum · 01/07/2008 17:53

nope.
i volunteer in the school second hand uniform shop so we have TONS of uniform and are never short. and i dont get pestered to do coffee mornings/baking/other things i cant do. [cunning]

I treat the boy's white clothes the same as nappies. I keep a big bucket with a lid on, a capful of napisan and some hot water and just add the clothes to the bucket through the week until we get to washing day.

Then just chuck them in the washer as usual and wash with your normal detergent.

Napisan is something I cannot manage without!

lilyloo · 02/07/2008 10:29

Right then will just replace shoes.

His 3 brand new jumpers were all full of pen after first week anyway.

i have to get my dd1 new uniform as she is going to a different school to her nuresry but will still be using her old tees, skirt and pinafor, she will get new jumpers and shoes (if she grows out of her old shoes, which i think she already has)

dp wanted to buy her uniform in a size too big so it lasted longer but i wouldnt let him!!

Nemoandthefishes · 02/07/2008 10:36

Think I would just replace essentials so things like trousers with holes in etc but the jumpers are expensive so maybe one new one for first couple of days but keep the others.

only replace when threadbare! Oh and i never buy the school photo as my threadbare is exactly that!

two many times i used to replace stuff because it got torn in the playground, but could be doing it almost weekly with one of mine. Luckily he is home ed now so saves a fortune!

lilyloo · 02/07/2008 11:41

Good idea FC just don't get the photo
