Hi just looking for advice really!

My very bright youngest turns 3 just after christmas. She loves jewelry has chile friendly bracelets etc has asked for jewellery off santa and for her birthday - she keeps mentioning earrings

So i explained to her lightly how she'd get to wear earrings. She is now asking for her ears to be pierced i kind of hoped itd put her off it the concept i didnt say anything gruesome but she still adamant she wants it! I said let's wait and see

I have 2 kids so know they can be so fixated on something then forget about it etc so will ride it out, but is it bad to get a 3 year old ears pierced? If she's asking? Again obviously I can say no but we're a bit on the fence with it. Just because she's asking a bit nd wants earrings

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I bought stick on earrings for DD at that age. She loved having them on, but there was no risk and it didn’t matter when she lost them.

Nope like religion etc they should be able to choose when they are at the age to make there own decisions

Why?

I want a Ferrari doesn’t mean I remortgage the house to get one.

holes in a 3 year old. How silly

Not sure what being bright has got to do with this - my dd wanted hers done but we waited til she was able to look matter them herself especially and that was after 2 years of asking. She was 9. A 3 year old has no idea what these things can entail.

She is 3, at the point to where you were explaining ear piercing to her all you had to do was add in that it was for ‘big/older/teen/insert age of choice’ people, not for 3 year olds.

TheOccupier · 13/10/2026 08:21

She's 3! She just wants to dress up and wear sparkly things. She doesn't understand about the pain and risks of ear piercing. Get her some of those little stick-on jewels.

When my dd was three she was a turtle. She had a bucket on her back with the handle across her tummy. She hated going in the car because turtles can’t go in car seats.

She’s nineteen now and she has no interest in turtles. She’s likes other things. And actually she’s never had her ears pierced wheats my oldest dd got hers done when she was thirteen.

I wouldn't. My daughter wanted to get them done at the age of 7. We let her, they got infected and needed to be removed. We've said she'll need to wait until she's a teenager if she wants to get them done again: old enough to properly look after them herself. As much as you try look after them, a younger child will fiddle with them and will not keep their hands clean.
As for babies & toddlers having piercings, I cannot get my head round it.

Littlecrake · 13/10/2026 08:53

It’s an awful age. Too young to care for them herself, old enough to get them caught when dressing and playing. Old enough to fuss when someone else cleans them, too young to not fiddle and make them grubby. If they don’t get done as a new-ish baby it’s best to leave until 10+ imo. A lot of parenting is saying “no” to things that they aren’t ready for or that will harm them - no matter how much they want to do them.

If she was asking for an eyebrow pricing would you also be on the fence? 3 years old is too young for body modification, and I’m pro-piercings 🤣 I’ve been so excited to get DD’s ears pierced one day but wanted to wait until she was an age where she had enough self control not tot touch or mess with them, as they really don’t want an infection. She eventually asked when she had just turned 6 as her school friends had started getting them done. I thought about it, explained it all about it hurting a little at first, then not being able to touch them and being super careful not to mess with them. She had them done and all was well. I definitely wouldn’t have done it any younger though.

buy her some clip ons for now, or even sticker earrings as they don’t put pressure on her lobes x

Eww no ! Unless you want your toddler looking like a cast member from ‘Shameless’

Favouritefruits · 13/10/2026 19:02

I buy my niece the stick on earrings maybe a pack of those would excite her if she loves jewellery. I’m not keen on little ones having their ears pierced but each to their own.
