Weaning 6 month old- but can’t sit up independently

Hi there’s so much advice out there about weaning and I keep seeing little one needs to sit up independently to eat food however my baby doesn’t do this yet and I’ve also heard that some babies don’t sit up without support well into 8 months - I just don’t see myself delaying it till then I have tried to feed her a little here and there to see what response I get and she shuts her mouth tightly shut. When I’m eating she stares at me and starts to move her own mouth. I’ve contacted health visitor they said to hold off till she can sit up but she is so hungry and increasing her milk day by day
I’ve tried to mix banana and her formula to give a similar taste but she didn’t enjoy it
she has good head control

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The high chairs I’ve been looking at all say only use if baby can sit independently, do you guys have any recommendations
I was really excited for weaning thinking it’ll be so fun and she’ll get to try so many different foods but my biggest challenge is her actually wanting to eat

Op, it was a two man job at our house… the mess…..I actually had a special set of clothes for feeding times! My husband used to call it my PPE! On a serious note though, it took months, and it totally broke my spirit. I would try different things and home cook and it call came straight out or smothered in her hair or thrown on the floor! Done days the dog needed a bath after her meal times!
mine was sitting up independently at 5 and half months (like a tripod) but I waited until 6 months. I used one of those sit me up seats first then progressed to the high chair (just regular high chair from John Lewis) I just wish I bought one without straps and padding as it is a pain to keep clean.
avocado was a winner here with banana (puree) best of luck

The basic IKEA high chair is good for when they aren't sitting independently and you can probably get one of FB marketplace v cheap. You can get padded inserts to help with the sitting. The stokke Tripp trapp is the best high chair for longer use imo, my 3yo is still using it.
I thought the advice was they need to be sitting with support and have good head control, good hand to mouth coordination and showing an interest in food. Don't reduce milk but try not to offer right after a milk feed. Very normal for not much to actually be eaten for the first month.

I weaned my son at 4 months. He couldn’t sit up at all!

What about those little fabric soft chairs which fully support the whole body? I used them to wean baby rice, porridge etc. No danger if you are supervising. I was always terrified my children would choke, so just gave half baby spoonfuls in the beginning. They are all still alive as are my grandchildren and great grandchildren! There is so much conflicting advice these days that new mums have their confidence shattered so easily.

As long as they can hold their head steady they are fine, if still a bit wobbly sitting in a high chair pad out
my youngest son now in his 40,s would not allow anyone to put food into his mouth
so I put finger food in front of him later gave him a spoon and puree
it created one hell of a mess so keep a large plastic sheet for your floor under the high chair and buy some all encompassing bibs.
For a child to refuse to eat is vanishingly rare, but if they pick up your anxiety they will respond to it, it’s a game for them
so relax they all get there

I have a 2.5 year old & a nearly 1 year old, the advice has always been (in my experience) that they don’t need to sit totally independently but they need to be able to stay in a sitting position & hold their head steady. If your baby can’t sit in a high chair without slouching or needs you to physically hold them upright then they are not ready.

Sorry but this 'they are not ready' is nonsense...when I had my children in the early 70's and when my daughter had hers in the 90's 4 months was the age for weaning and I believe this had always previously been the case. 🙄
We just leaned the babies on a cushion or pillow so they were as upright as possible and shovelled Farley's Rusks in warm milk, baby rice or pureed fruit or veg into their ever open little mouths as fast as we could without ANY problems whatsover!! Not sure when it changed to 6 months or quite frankly when it did and I would lay money on there being a fair few parents who use their own judgment with weaning and there are probably many 4 monthers still getting their Farleys or something similar!😊

Should read: 'Not sure when it changed to 6 months or quite frankly WHY it did'!
Must proof read before posting!! 🙄
